McLaren MP4-12C Full Spec

Quote:
McLaren has revealed the MP4-12C supercar to the media today and we have a lot of the official details.

The two-seat MP4-12C has a 3.8-litre twin turbo petrol engine developed in collaboration with Ricardo. Maximum power output is a blazing 441 kW (592 bhp / 600 PS) developed at 7,000 rpm. The engine can rev all the way up to a dizzy 8,500 rpm. Its peak torque rivals some of the most powerful turbo diesels out there at 599 Nm (442 lb-ft) from 3,000 rpm. Apparently 479 Nm (353 lb-ft) of that is already available from 2,000 rpm. Performance figures are not available yet but expect 0 - 100 km/h figures in the very low 3s and a top speed well over 300 km/h (186 mph).

Torque goes to the rear axle through a 7-speed double clutch gearbox prompted by F1-style aluminium rockers situated behind the steering wheel. It offers a choice of Normal, Sport and Track driving modes. There's also two configurations namely H and P. H refers to handling and changes things like steering weight, suspension stiffness and stability control. Choosing P mode alters throttle response, gearshift times and engine sounds.

Because the car is so compact (4507mm long, 1908mm wide, 1199mm high and with a wheelbase of 2670mm) and thanks to a carbon composite monocoque, plus a claimed dry weight of less than 1,300kg (2,866 lbs), certain advantages are there for the taking. The main one is of course better performance, but there is also the small matter of C02 emissions. McLaren Automotive reports a figure of under 300g/km, significantly lower than its key rivals, the Ferrari 458 Italia and the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG.
Peak power only @ 7,000rpm, peak torque @ 3,000rpm.

Not the dizzy highs we expected even though it will still rev to 8,500rpm, a graph of the actual power and torque curves will be interesting to see.

Once you add fluids, it's going to be around 3100lbs. You can't run it at the dry weight. Fuel, oil, coolant really are necessary.

That being said, this is going to be one helluva supercar!

Lexus spends 10 years developing a "supercar" and they won't touch this car.

It's just a terrible color, once they show it in a non Pontiac Solstice color, it should look much better.

That is just my dream-car. It would be very hard for me to chose between Ferrari 458 Italia and McLaren MP4-12C. They are both beautiful, and both very special engines in their way. One big NA and an other small FI.

I have a feeling this car will outperform most if not all supercars regardless of price range.

I don't like the gills and the similar design of the front fascia.

458 Italia looks better to me. Also, they took away the middle seat! Tsk tsk...

Ferrari is a great names and no doubt the 458 is probably the best car ever to wear the badge, but the MP4-12C is in a different league altogether. My question is, whether the likes of Porsche will sit back or raise to the challenge of trying to better this car. I don't think anyone would argue that the basic design of the 911 isn't up to the job so will we finally see Porsche developing something based on the next R8 chassis?

IMO, Standard Mclaren F1's dont look that nice either

Its the LM & Race variants that bring out the aggressive look ,I believe race versions of the MP4-12C will be just as menacing.

this car is not meant to be a successor to the F1. Infact it is no where near it. Even Mclaren said this themselves. This is thir first stand alone car, by that I mean everything they have come up with. Example. Engine is not from BMW.

Check this out:

Quote:
Following McLaren Automotive’s grand opening yesterday, the company has released more details on its upcoming supercar, the MP4-12C, and the preliminary numbers look quite promising.

Utilizing the launch-control function of its dual-clutch, seven-speed gearbox (there’s no three-pedal manual available), McLaren claims the car is capable of a 0-to-60-mph time of under 3 seconds and a 0–124 time of under 10 seconds. Those acceleration numbers would make the 600-horsepower 12C quicker than the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 (3.4 seconds), the Ferrari 430 Scuderia (3.5), the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 (3.2), and possibly the new Porsche 911 Turbo (2.9). We haven’t tested the new 562-horsepower Ferrari 458 Italia, but our estimate for that car is a 3.3-second run to 60.

Although McLaren wasn’t ready to release the curb weight of the new car (or the kerb weight, for that matter), it did reveal that the dry weight—weight without any fluids—of the lightest version will come in at 2860 pounds. McLaren’s number leads us to expect a curb weight of around 3200 pounds, making it roughly 200 pounds lighter than the less-powerful 458 Italia.

if the production car looks like that, I'm disappointment.

458 is hands down the better looking car based on pics.

well thats just BADASS.

0-124mph in under 10 seconds??? holy crap. For a production car that is just smoking fast.

oh, and those comments in that quote mean nothing to me. 0-60 numbers are far from a true indicator of a cars power to weight. Its more of an indicator on its traction from a dig.

The New York Times has reported U.S. base price is $191K!
McLaren Automotive is aiming for the 12C to be at least 75 kilos lighter than its nearest competitor and a long list of further lightweight solutions highlights the 12C’s introduction as a new type of sports car, driven by McLaren Automotive’s obsessive attention-to-detail. Examples include:

* Standard composite brake system of forged aluminium and cast iron is lighter than the optional carbon-ceramic brake system, saving five kilos
* Low-weight Lithium-Ion battery saves 10kgs
* Lightweight magnesium structural beam supports the dashboard
* Small, twin-turbocharged V8 engine delivers 600PS from 3.8-litre capacity
* Rear mounted engine cooling radiators minimise the pipework, the fluids contained within them, and therefore weight. They were also mounted in car line to minimise vehicle width and weight.
* Hexagonal aluminium wiring saves four kilos over circular wiring.
