Who pays for their music?
1. It is much more convenient to steal music than buy it.
2. It is quite expensive for a download (no qualms with buying the CD's once in a while) 3. My only persuasion to pay for the music comes from a legal standpoint, not an ethical one

Ok, let me represent the minority here:
No, it's not, it's just cheaper. I can't think of an easier way than to download songs from iTunes. Only downturn is when you're looking for some special remixes or new songs that might be on iTunes yet. But there are other legal sources for such songs. Quote:

My biggest concern with legal music platforms like iTunes used to be DRM. Now they're all DRM-free so I can use them in any other program like Traktor or SSL. Fast, convenient, legal and not that expensive. I don't know what more to ask for? Best regards, south

Concerts. Pretty sure most bands pocket a decent amount of coin from them.

I listen to such a variety of music. I wouldn't be able to afford the clothes on my back if I bought everything that I like. So, in conclusion, I <3 torrents.

Completely irrelevant. If you don't want to pay for the music, that's fine. But bands having a couple of different income streams is not justification for not paying for music. Before Napster you wouldn't have stolen a CD from a store because "the band will still make money touring". Why is it different when its an MP3? |

I think the price is steep when you can buy a CD for the same price or (most of the time) cheaper. As someone said, Concerts are one. Licensing also, probably. Thanks

I buy MP3s from Amazon.com. $1 a song.

its a pain in the ass having to find a torrent site to download a song that you hope has comparable quality and no viruses. |

Lets say you get 2 jobs. One as a Walmart greeter and the other at McDonalds. At the end of you first week at McD's you manager says "I know you have another job, so I'm not going to pay you for the week." Is that fair? Last edited by southlight; 09-28-2009 at 01:38 PM.. Reason: - |

Before napster, there was scour.net (forgot what was right before that). When I discovered MP3's, I only bought CD's from bands I wanted to support. This was in college and I was pretty poor anyways, so that was my excuse.
I didn't start buying a lot of music until Apple opened the iTunes music store. And convenience was the main reason why. It's actually easier to pay for songs via iTunes than to steal them. Not only that, you are guaranteed to get a good copy (no pops/crappy bitrates, although arguable) and you can be sure the metadata is entered correctly. I started to buy from Amazon when they started selling MP3's because they were DRM-free, but now that iTunes is as well, I'm back to that. I'm still waiting for Apple to have a subscription model like the Zune store. I'd be all over that.

You should learn about multiplication, if i have a relatively modest collection of 5000 downloaded songs, i would have paid about as much in dollars. Not an insignificant number.

A lot of times, I download music as a trial. If I like it, I buy the CD. Honestly though, most music has been disappointing as of late. BP3 was not as good as everyone says it was....maybe I'm just getting old but I can't stomach most new age hip hop anymore. Most stuff i listen to is underground and not available on iTunes so I have no choice lol
