Study says homework is worthless
Anyone that is still in school show this to your teachers next time they load you up with homework!

Well they're talking about excessive homework, and in lower grades. I find that when teachers assign regular homework I get more involved in the class and don't procrastinate until the tests to look over material. I do agree though that too much homework is frustrating and can affect students negatively because they won't get enough sleep or have enough time for other classes or time to relax.

I didnt do any homework until I got to college, as Im tryin to get into med school. But i dont agree that homework goes nothing, because you need that reinforcement of the work that you are doing so that you understand it.

I think my alltime favorite homework assignment was when I was a freshman in college. In fact, it was my first collegiate homework assignment. We had to draw a flowchart of everything we did from the moment the alarm clock sounded in our bedroom to the time we walked into class. Fortunately, it was an 8 o'clock class.
Everyone failed the assignment. From an instructional standpoint it reinforced the course subject (Introduction to Computer Science) in a rather humorous manner that couldn't have been done inside a classroom.

i agree that homework is pointless. i also feel that everything i learned in 3.5 years of highschool, actually LEARNED, could have been crammed into 2 years tops.

Just my opinion so please no roaring My personal observation
I see all the crap my daughter gets piled on with and I just shake my head. I feel they try to cram too much and the kids end up learning nothing. She gets mostly A's but is a little weak in math but she still gets a B+. Some nights she is up till 11pm trying to finish all the assignments. I would be happier with smaller more concentrated subjects. I also see a lot of creativity being thrown out because there is too much book learning that is done vs. experimenting, learning by mistake or trying to find creative solutions. I am a software engineer and I even went to the school and argued that they spend WAY too much money on computers in elementrary and middle school. I swear sometimes the teachers use the computers like some parents use television to baby sit. I go to Brazil, Russia, India and China and most of the people I am trying to hire never saw a computer before college because they were too poor to afford a computer at home. While they are not as creative thinkers, they sure have great math, computer and even english skills. More so than some of the US students I have interviewed who continue to have spelling errors on their resumes. And this next statement will surely get flames, but in some cases I would take C student from another country vs an A student from the USA. While I have never actually done this, I am using it as a comparison of some people I have interviewed over the last two years. I get very, very depressed when I see some of the stuff being done in US schools. I know a lot of people who home school their kids, I have over time understood why. I apologize for the vent. |

The entire American educational system is a farce. I didn't develop so much as a modicum of respect for any of it until I reached the university level.
The real problem is that students are merely trained to regurgitate facts - deductive reasoning and logic have fallen by the wayside. Students aren't taught to think (though some are undoubtedly incapable regardless of how or what they're taught), only memorize. I've always been a huge proponent of thesis papers and essays as a replacement for the traditional regurgitative examination. Legitimate learning isn't about reciting data - data is a mere prerequisite to an actual understanding of the subject at hand. Raw knowledge is merely an enabler, not an end. Go into virtually any major university in the US today and announce to a class of undergraduate students that their entire grade will be based upon a single essay style exam, to be taken at the conclusion of the semester. Revel in the panic. They'll all be expecting bonus points for taking quizzes or doing cute little extra credit assignments. Amusing, really.

haha. jk. with billions of dollars being spent on war, how could we get money to better schools anyway? i guess in 100 years we will own all this foreign land and everyone in america will be stupid cause we didnt have money to pay teachers, buy books, have art a nd music departments. P.s. again, just my opinion. and i didnt spell check. if something is spelled wrong, or grammtically incorrect, that would just prove my point more..
