Object on the road message

Folks, I get the object on road message on our highway run on weekly basis. I’ve never seen any objects on the road.

Do you guys know where BMW pulls their data from?

It’s like the boy who cried wolf.

I have experienced this too, less so recently. My favorite was a “wrong way driver” alert while driving north on Hwy 280 towards SF. Like you I felt it’s all been a bit cry wolf for me.

Edit - seeing you’re in NorCal as well, I *think* the data feed is either coming from CalTrans or CHP as I was able to find a reference to the wrong way drive incident on one of their websites after I got to my destination. I’m not 100% sure though.

I have had this happen once in my LCI F10 M5, an object in the road message on 101 around Redwood City. There was actually debris in the road, I recall that a marker appeared in the Nav with distance counting down and it was accurate. It happened again with more than just a couple seconds warning on the return trip in the same place but the debris was gone. My thought at the time was it was from CHP through the RTTI (comes through some FM band), which used to be pretty informative about traffic jams in years past and much older cars like E60 as well as aftermarket head units I put in more vintage cars. It might have been throught the 3G connected drive modem in the BMW which maybe still worked at the time.

I have not seen any warnings like this from BMW here in SoCal. The only warnings I get are ones from Waze which is running in the background on my phone. It will ding and warn me of stuff via Android Auto while I'm using the built-in BMW navigation.

I think Scrapula is saying that Apple Maps will do this too?

My only warnings so far have been after I turned on the “Uneven road surfaces” alert. It gave me a heads up about crossing a 4 rail railroad track with lots of uneven surfaces. I always go very slow over it anyway, but wasn’t expecting that.

I get lots of uneven surface warnings too. usually at train tracks, or the beginning of steep hills/driveways.

LOL - not a lot on 101 from 92 north - there’s a consistent part on the 3rd bore of the Caldecott tunnel heading westbound that brings this up for me though, along with the junction of Southwood and Moraga Way in Orinda. Not sure why those places are special, but there you go….pavement being crappy is insufficient to cause this, it needs a certain amount of undulation to qualify seemingly.

It’s a fun ride through the tunnel and down to Oakland, past Rockridge. I can’t imagine doing it in this car though, I’d be unconsciously clipping along at 90mph only to find the cops on the downward slope, with my luck!

Gives me killer regen from the outlet of the tunnel down to the bay bridge toll plaza. All those delicious free kWh of power.
