i5 M60 - TBoned & Sacrified...but we're fine

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Such a tragedy. Just over 7 months & 9700 grin-inducing miles our mega-optioned i5 M60 was T-boned by an old lady....after she rear-ended the vehicle in front of her and drove through the red light!

My adult kids, my wife (and dog) are banged up but (generally) fine.

The vehicle was heroic - 3 air bags for front passengers and the rear had the side airbag as the car was pivoted nearly 90 degrees, after being struck just in front of the front driver tire - literally ripping it's face off.

99% sure it's totalled. Only took 2+ months to find, and had to ship it in from Texas! GrrrrrName: Point of impact.jpg

I’m glad the family you and the dogs are OK. I mean it is a nice car but hopefully can replace with something equal or better

So glad you’re family is okay. And that the 5’er was wonderful during its final closing act.

People were saying in another post that the G60 does not have a knee airbag but clearly it looks like it does.

Best possible outcome of a horrible event. It’ll get replaced for sure.

That looks like a bad one—scary. Glad you’re all ok.

Some idiot driver t-boned me 2 years ago in our X5 going about 50mph in the snow while I was stopped waiting to make a turn. Ran OVER a stop sign on the way to hitting me as I tried to get out of the way—saw her coming. She was from Atlanta and said “my brakes just didn’t work!” Newborn in her backseat. Hit me so hard it sheered the bottom off some of the tires and almost flipped the X5. If she had not hit me, she would have Dukes of Hazzarded it over an embankment and into our local Lexus dealership.

I was banged up good too, but the car protected me. Her Toyota was destroyed.

Bottom line: We get what we pay for. Performance, features, yes—but engineering that includes safety.

Glad your family is ok. You’ll have fun optioning out the next car.

This gentleman was the former Director at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. His brand and vehicle choice speak volumes to me regarding BMW’s engineering. Of the myriad of vehicles that he likely had data on to make an informed choice, at the time, he credits BMW for saving his life.

Glad to hear no one was seriously injured. That's always the most important thing, all things considered.

Sorry you have to deal with this. I understand how frustrating it can be when prized possessions are damaged due to other people's negligence or limited abilities coupled with over confidence.

I’m glad that everyone is basically ok in your original post about your situation. I read about this guy from the IIHS and that was a major reason that I went ahead with the upgrade to my F90.

Sorry to hear about your car! Te car did exactly what the engineers designed it to do by shearing the energy away from the cabin and protecting your family.
From an insurance standpoint I personally would say your car would be considered salvaged.

I hope you find another one of these fantastic cars. Love driving that model.

Nothing else is as important. Almost surely totaled. Start looking for a new one.

See you and your family OK that was most important. You can definitely get another five series. Hope everything works out and you get what you need to get from her insurance company and any additional damages.

One could not possibly express this any better. Some time ago, our neighbor driving X5 was hit by a careless driver. X5 did not make it and had to be totaled. My neighbor walked away and went straight to a local BMW dealer to order another X5.

Echoing every previous note. It's a blessing everyone is OK.

The scenery in the photos suggests the accident took place somewhere in Dana Point. Golden Lantern and ... ?

It's deafining initially. In our instance the driver had chemical burns on both forearms (you could see the outline of his watchband), and my daughter (front seat passenger) had redness on he knees and shins. But everyone was somewhat deaf for a bit. It happens so fast, you really don't feel anything.

Golden Lanturn & Selva Road. We were crossing Golden Lantern on Selva - 1st car at green light. Waco lady headed up the hill on Golden Lantern first rear ended car in #2 lane (stopped at red), then drove around her in the "right turn only" lane (flooring it) going straight ahead through the red light to broadside us.

She then bounce off our car to hit the center median - then had the gall to drive away! Her first hit got mad and followed her, honking all the time, and she finally U-turned a block later and parked on the other side of the intersection. Then, as police arrived she left the scene AGAIN on foot "I have to go to the bathroom and my house is just over there" and dissapeared for 30 min. (!!!) before returning (running accross traffic (!) She's in her late 60 ~ 70's. While she looked like she failed the field sobriety test, I suspect she suffers from Alzheimers or something.

I think her car was electric or hybrid (Mitsubishi Miev) which must be why she could drive it at all after hitting ours...
