G60 - Air Bag Safety

Here's something interesting. I recall a recent discussion where people commented on a lack of knee airbags in the G60. This evening, I was on the U.S. DOT website and used their VIN decoder.

https://vpic.nhtsa.dot.gov/decoder/Decoder

Much to my surprise in the safety equipment list:

Airbags:
Front: 1st Row (Driver and Passenger)
Knee: 1st Row (Driver and Passenger)
Side: 1st and 2nd Rows
Curtain: 1st and 2nd Rows
Seat Cushion:
Other Restraint Info: Seat Belt: All positions / Pretensioners, Side Airbags: Front Row & Rear Outboard Driver-side, Rear Outboard Passenger-side

Not sure if anyone has seen this specific crash test video below, however, I'm fascinated at about 34 seconds with the side impact test.

Well, I unfortunately got to test those in a "real world" case when a red light runner T-boned our i5 M60 with three people aboard. Hit right in front of the front wheel to spin our 5,300lb car 90 degrees and ripped the entire face off. But everyone walked away with just some soreness. Front seats have three (3) airbags (chest, knee & side) while rear only have side.

The car is probably totalled, but it sacraficed itself to save my family.

That really wins the “above and beyond” award for helping out a fellow forum member with a question.

(As noted in your other thread - glad you’re all OK!)

Well, we're a family of over achievers!

Seriously, without all those bags this would have been a life changing accident - not in a good way. They all have aches and pains they're working through, but those will fade fairly quickly! Nothing broken, no blood and no ambulance - and everyone's regular hearing has returned after the LOUD deployment.

As someone who works in healthcare I’m very sympathetic to what they’ve gone through. I was in a vehicle that was rear ended once, and it’s the days following the event that make you wonder what happened.

No more, experimental testing for the sake of the group, please! 😜

And that goes for the rest of you too!

My wife was rear-ended twice, several years apart. First in a 2002 Jetta, and the second time in a Land Rover LR3. Both times I was away at sea. She still has neck and shoulder issues to this day. So I feel for them.
