i5 M60 -- Quirky Item #1

I'm new to this forum, and before posting I tried to see if there was an archive that I could search for answers, but couldn't see one, so here is my question, having owned this car now for 3 months and uncovered many quirky things about it.

For example, on days when the outside temp is say 25F or 30F and I pull out of my garage with the display temp showing in the high 40F range, after driving the car for a bit, a warning gong goes off and a display pops up saying the outside temp in 37F. And it then proceeds to continue to drop until reaching the true outside temp of say 26F.

But it aways sounds the alert at exactly 37F -- is there something really important about 37F, and more importantly, is there a way to disable this distraction? I hate unnecessary distractions.

Thanks.

Warning Temperature for Possible Ice

37 degrees Fahrenheit is the temperature most vehicle manufactures use to warn for possible ice on cold surfaces.

Ditto Week 38. BMWs have done this for at least 30 years.

The above. It's to alert you to the possibility of ice on the road/overpasses/bridges. It can't be turned off, but you can totally ignore it if you're already aware that the outside temperature has just reached 37 degrees from your inner spidey sense, precision external body sensors and you are the weatherman, and that you may hit an unexpected patch of ice and end up in the trees even though you checked your bird bath thermometer this morning having your morning coffee before your commute, and it was above freezing. Or if you faied to notice in the morning rush that it was below freezing. Who needs another warning in their life, I say. Hold my beer.

Thanks all.

In half a century of driving I've never had a problem driving on ice, and I hate being nagged by something as meaningless as this, every time I start out in the morning when it's cold outside. I thought BMW strove to improve the driving experience?

BMW should give the option to disable this useless "feature".

My SAAB displayed a similar warning back in the 90s. I don’t believe it was possible to turn it off either.

I think this is a Hofmeister kink thing. It predates all the litigious crap. I think it’s just a BMW vision thing.

Even though your question applies to pretty much any BMW, this is actually an iX forum. i5 one is located here - https://g60.bimmerpost.com/forums/fo...play.php?f=950

My 2010 3 series did that too - I think it’s been a thing for a while.

It’s useful in areas or times of year when it’s unexpectedly chilly and there’s just a slight frost, or it tends to look wet but is freezing. Not so useful in mid winter when it’s obviously icy.

Really not a big deal though either way, it’s honestly a great sign if these are the sorts of complaints one has.
