Iconic sounds

Curious to hear everyone’s thoughts on the iconic sounds. Do you like it or no? And are there any differences in the sounds between the electric i5/M60 versions vs the gas 530i/540i or are the sounds the same between all models?

I didn’t think ICE models have iconic sounds since the sounds are meant to substitute for the sound of a combustion engine. I could definitely be wrong though. Personally I like them especially the ones in sport mode.

Here is a similar thread about the different modes. Since the sounds are generally linked to the mode, I thought you might find this thread interesting too.

I’m just used to it now to be honest. It neither bothers nor excites me.

Same. I turned them off. Way too loud and fake sounding.

Same. I really barely hear them now. They were MUCH louder in our iX 50 and iX 60.

I still love mine. It’s not a substitute for engine noise, it’s a user experience. I have always been influenced by sounds when driving. I find that I would drive more aggressively with punk rock on the stereo vs a Rachmaninov piano concerto. Relax mode keeps me calm. I really love expressive, if I am listening to music, I turn them off.

They're all fun. I find expressive the weirdest. It kind of sounds like a spaceship of some sort. Still fun, though.

whenever I start a Rachmaninoff marathon, I skip the 4th mov. of his 2nd symphony. Somehow it always makes me overly excited and drive faster than usual. Especially the one with RNO conducted by Pletnev.

Edit:
speaking of symphonies.... I'm currently listening to this obscure but lovely piece by Bortkiewicz:

Bortkiewicz: Symphony No. 1 in D Major, Op. 52

Now I’m imagining you going all Wayne’s world at the symphony.

Rock on, Garth!

forget iconic sound... it doesn't sound bad, but it's nothing compared to a real aftermarket exhaust..... I plan to have one installed by the end of this year... but not sure on which car(X1 or 530i) yet.

Serious question - while I love Hans Zimmer, I wonder why BMW didn’t include a V8 soundtrack option or hell even some crazy supercar soundtrack? Hyundai’s Ioniq 5N has a pretty interesting soundtrack that’s trying to make it sound like a rally car. It’s not something I’m missing terribly but it could have been a fun option.

If the 5 series sells well, BMW would be crazy not to offer this kind of thing in the online store for the car as optional extras for a nominal fee. New sounds, new color presets, new drive modes, etc. I'm sure some folks would buy this stuff if it were reasonably priced.

I would be shocked if BMW offered this (not even Tesla has, to my knowledge). Adding an ICE sound to an EV, is a very un-German mindset (ich weiß das )

I have no desire for loud exhaust. I’ve never saw the need. A growl of a V8 is different and has nothing to do with exhaust sounds .

Agree, and it's so pleasant when someone zooms through a quiet residential street late in the evening with an exhaust that sounds like an explosion.

Agreed, I was thinking of the internal soundtrack the driver hears. Check out what Hyundai’s done with their ioniq 5N here (7mins in)

guess I still have a lot of growing up to do. almost 40 years ago, I put a giant HKS exhaust on my Nissan 300ZX. I do mean giant because it was so big that I could put a soda can inside. I was young and dumb.(obviously) My friend and I would drive through tunnels at 3AM with all the windows down and T-Top removed. NYPD and Maryland troopers were not amused, but didn't give us any problems.(even police officers were more chill back in the 1980s)

There is an iconic sounds button, but it only turns on or off the pumped in engine sound.
