Two Finger Gesture to switch to sport mode
Hi Folks -
I've read a bunch of posts where people have assigned a switch to sport mode to the two finger gesture, and I can't figure out how to do it. I can get 2 fingers to bring me to "my modes" but am lost as to how to go specifically to sport mode (or another mode). Would someone be so kind as to write step by step instructions? I think this warrants its own thread so that people can find it easily when they want to set it up. Thanks! |

To shut off the dreaded auto stop-start, right?
Yes, finding a way to assign sport mode to that gesture would be very helpful. |

I'm sure this won't lead to a fruitful conversation but I'll ask anyway: with all due respect, why would the auto stop-start be more dreadful than wasting fuel, which is polluting as all hell and non-renewable, while stopped at a traffic light?
I understand the slight discomfort that can be caused by the engine re-starting, but is eleminating that very slight annoyance really worth wasting gas for? |

However most recent and credible sources claim that the fuel savings are significant enough and that recent cars are made to be "stopped-sarted" without any undue wear. Here's one source among others: https://www.cbsnews.com/minnesota/ne...-your-vehicle/ It's also possible that it's better for the engine to stop when not needed, even if it's for a few seconds or a minute at a time. Those add up and your engine is less "used" after 6-7 years. But in all cases every effort counts to diminish the quantity of toxic gas that we emit in the air that we breathe... Thanks... when I do this, I only get "Add Shortcut" and it adds sport mode to the pull down menu. I don't seem to get "add gesture shortcut" like I do in other places. I wonder what could be different?

Ok, this might be because you already have those gestures assigned to something. If you go into the search bar of the main menu, you can look up gesture controls and un assign the gesture you want to free up for sport mode and try again, if that works.

If I remember correctly, cars with the latest 11/2023 software no longer have the ability to assign a gesture to Sport mode. Please do correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought we discussed this in another thread here recently.

I was unable to add it to gesture control. Major bummer. I just say “hey bmw activate sport mode” or push up to my shortcuts

Having had my fair share of ICE vehicles with Auto Start/Stop, I can tell you that it is an annoyance, an interruption to an otherwise blissful experience, and a delay to get moving again. Now the implementation of Auto Start-Stop on 48V mild hybrid systems are a bit better. |

Having worked on massive diesel engines most of my adult life I can with certainty say that the only time the starting of an engine is harmful is after it has been sitting off for hours. The initial start of an engine occurs at the same time the oil pump starts. Engine spins and oil pump spins. This very small amount of time between the engine starting and the oil reaching its target is when the majority of the wear takes place. Stop and start at a stop light for several minutes will not leave the metal unprotected as the oil will still be present in the upper galley and coating the cylinders and journal bearings. So that covers the harmful part. The pollution bit is the same as the oil bit. A cold engine pollutes more than a hot engine due to incomplete combustion. This again is a very small amount of time as the engine heats up very quickly. Getting back to the start and stop the engine is warm/hot already and the emissions are no worse then when driving. The engines I operate require us to pre-lubricate them with an external oil pump before we can even get a permissive to start them.
