Prayers at the Inauguration??? Inappropriate!!!

Why is there a Pastor and Prayer in the ceremony? Doesn't that go right against separation of Church and State? It's inappropriate and has absolutely no place in the ceremony.

The constitution bans the establishment of a state religion. it does not guarantee freedom FROM religion.

I don't agree with it.

but it's tradition. A lot of the parts of today's happenings are completely outdated, but they'll do everything by the book, and that's understandable.

I don't totally disagree with it, because GOD can be anything you wanted to be, what I don't agree with is quoting the OUR FATHER at the inauguration. I am Catholic, and i can see why many people might think its wrong.

I was surprised by the mention of "our Israel". I didn't quite catch the context, but I can imagine that being misinterpreted in so many ways. I think it would have been better to leave that out entirely.

Seriously though, you're right. This is a travesty, we should all cry and be insulted.

I can't believe everyone else is not as insulted as you.

Study your history boys...separation of church and state is a term coined in a letter from Jefferson to a citizen in the early 1800's in response to her concern about enforcement of specific dogma on her child.
The founding fathers penned the Constitution to forbid the establishment of a national religion (such as the one they had just come from).
If you don't believe in God, that doesn't give you the right to take away the right of another person to believe and pray and have God as a part of their life and, in this case, a part of their presidency.
No one tells you that you HAVE to pray, right? Don't tell others they shouldn't. And don't say that he shouldn't because he is supposed to represent everyone. His nation voted him into office, religion and all.

Are you serious? If Obama is a Christian, he has the right to practice his religion. Are you aware of this document called the Constitution? Nowhere in this slightly important document, is a "separation of church and state" explicitly stated.

A portion of first amendment (1 of 10 amendments in the Bill of Rights in the Constitution) guarantees that:

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech..."

The President is also sworn in on the Bible.

Obama also referenced God in his speech, as most Presidents will mention God somewhere in their speech usually more than once, and oftentimes in the first minute or last minute.

Nobody in the government is trying to establish a particular religion over another, so why are you raining on Obama's free exercise parade? No one was being forced to pray.

Ditto and bravo.

I guess they'd rather someone come up there and spew a bunch of evil and hatred and damn the new President and American's.
Atheists are a bunch of hypocrits, they don't want to believe in something, but then tell everyone else they can't believe either....basically forcing THEIR lack of beliefs onto others.
I just don't get Atheists anyway. What is the harm in believing in something GOOD and the possibility of a wonderful soul and life after death on this earth?

Cause even if there was the slightest, itty bitty chance of an afterlife wouldn't they rather just BELIEVE in that good and spread that love and good than take a chance of having their souls be damned for eternity to misery? Just absolutely boggles the mind that for 70-80 years of life on earth they couldn't just embrace good and love and faith in a God, but would rather feel THEY know more, that THEY are right, and that THEY need to tell others they are wrong. Hypocritical and just unbelievably ignorant.
Good luck to them. I guess for 2009 years 99.5% of the BILLIONS and Billions of people who have lived on this earth have been all wrong.

If people here don't like it, move to a country that has no rights, join a cult that doesn't believe in God and live that way then. Guess those people live the good life in their minds, so join them, and good riddance!

I completely disagree. My opinion is just that...an "Opinion". Doesn't mean I am wrong...doesn't mean you are either.

The thread actually created a constructive debate...THAT...is not BACKFIRING...that is a GOOD THREAD!!!

You can disagree all you want, but your opinion was clearly wrong and based on a faulty understanding of the Bill of Rights. Quite simply, you were wrong.

As for the thread being originally started to foster debate (rather then pushing your incorrect beliefs about the letter of the law on the intermingling of church and state), that's questionable.
