Would you buy yourself an electric sports car? Electric vehicle are nice and quick. They'll bring you from point A to point B. I've got myself an X5 45e and an S2000 and my S2000 takes me to point A to point Z with a handful of late night canyon carvings. Electric sports cars are stupid quick and that's it. Nothing else. I won't be chasing lap times or doing 1/4 mile runs. I'm crossing my fingers on the upcoming Toyota Supra with the M4 G82 engine with a manual transmission. It will be a JDM and GDM in one package.

I'd have to drive a proper one. My wife has a Volt, which is by no means a sports car but it's rather small and a car that size should be tossable but you can just feel the weight in it. Even with its meager power, the torque is enough to feel quick (it's not) but the weight just makes it miserable to me on twisty roads.

I know ICE cars have gotten heavier and heavier but it just doesn't feel the same. Her car is only 3500# and my GC is a full 1k heavier but doesn't feel nearly as heavy. I think its because it has all that mass in one spot.

Really don't want a SUV. And I don't want a heavy electric sedan with 35 aspect ratio tires.

Want an electric front wheel drive or rear wheel drive hatch, the size / height / length of a Golf or Subaru WRX, with 55 or 60 series aspect ratio tires and designed to be very good handling.

True electric sport cars won't be available until solid state battery tech is available.

With current battery tech(weight and size) it is impossible to build a mkV Supra sized EV sports car that weighs minimum 3500lbs, 300mile range, and at least 350hp.

By my definition of a Sports Car, which admittedly is pretty strict, no electric Sports Cars have been made, and probably won't be for quite a while.

If you mean "sporty car", then sure, if it made sense.

To me a sports car is all about engaging the driver especially on a twisty road. I want lightness, gears to play around with, steering feedback, and noise. These all create the visceral experience between car and driver in a sports car. So naturally I find the current automotive and political climate depressing.

One of my parents' neighbors has a red Tesla roadster. There is no drama with that car at all, I can't understand his obsession with it. I can't even tell when it's on. Some others have V8 F types, 911s, Cayman GTS, Ferrari, etc. Those have such a sense of occasion in comparison.

I'm sure the EV Boxster will still be a very enjoyable handling despite its projected 600 lb weight gain, so at least fun can still be had. It just won't be the same. :/

i wouldn't mind it. i'd keep my gt3... but something like a 86 or boxster with a battery would be fun daily sports car. instant torque down low. no engine buzzing or vibrating into the cabin. no droning on the highway at 90mph. lower center or gravity. no warm up. no moving parts to fail. more luggage space

but we aren't close to anything like that yet. batteries are way too heavy for a sports car. a model 3 performance is like 4000 pounds

Would definitely not buy an EV Sports Car. To me, there are too many aspects that I value in a sports car that an EV cannot re-create, such as an engaging transmission (DCT or Manual), as well as exhaust and an overall character/personality to an engine that is different at any speed. This is why I am curious to see how the Dodge Charger Daytona Concept will play out with its "exhaust" and "transmission" that they have given the car, but I fear it will be entirely synthetic and disconnected.

To me, EV's are great as commuters and luxury cars, as they are silent, effortless, smooth, and have no NVH or clunkiness to them, and eventually the range on most of them will be satisfiable for many. But for sports cars, I can't see them as a true replacement.

Original Tesla Roadster was pretty close to one, weighed just under 2800 lbs with that Lotus tub. I'm guessing Porsche could make a 3500 lb roadster.

Absolute hard pass. I understand the benefits an EV can bring to the table as a commuter but as a sports car? No. It's an emotive purchase, without organic noise and synchronised moving parts, there's no emotion.

Our loss already happened. 0.5L/cylinder turbocharged cars with a ZF8 auto and ZF EPS. The cars that don't fit into that formula are few and far between.


I'd take an electric Miata/Boxster with rwd before anything with a ZF8 and awd.

I'd 100% buy one for my commuter/DD. They are perfect for the M-lite crowd and what you'd use those for. Ideally I'd have a 3 car garage so I can have a dedicated space for a weekend fun car. That car would probably grow even more extreme then.

It would have been easier to have a long term model where we could have both EVs and ICEs widely available if we had gotten a price on carbon.

I've got a G80 6MT on order. I may order another G80 6MT in its final year of production before the M3 goes hybrid or EV... and then just hold on to that as long as possible.
