Oscar Piastri: super talent on his way to F1 - McLaren (2023)
With Alonso's seat up for grabs at Alpine, Oscar Piastri can at last enter Formula 1 in 2023.
Calibre: Leclerc, Russell, Sainz and Verstappen. Dedicated training in 2022 by Alpine (English from 01:45 onwards):

Artemis did you see all the whacky stuff about this?
Apparently, Alpine only found out that Alonso signed with Aston yesterday and they basically gave permission for McLaren to take Piastri (they assumed Fernando was staying at least another year). Now it seems like there's an agreement between Piastri and McLaren but Alpine is going to fight it or end up with Danny Ric. |

I've seen that Piastri is in contract and absolutely can't got to McLaren as his contract doesn't allow it. Something fishy going on, as long as he gets a drive it should be good he looks a real talent.

If Alpine loses Piastri to McLaren, they should kick themselves for their major mistake of messing with a super talent. Not saying that "Ocon - Piastri" is like "Kyvat - Verstappen", but Alpine should not have wasted the 2022 season for Piastri. If this guy gets a good F1 car, he's capable of spicing F1 with nice battles with the very best. Affirmative. Mark Webber (Piastri's manager) must have answered the phone.

I'm reading that Piastri's contract may have had a clause for this which expired July 31st which makes this extra hilarious because Alonso is a mastermind.

Wow this is a bit of a plot twist isn’t it. Time to crack open the popcorn.
Either way can Piastri go back to Alpine after this to drive for them, hardly the best way to sign with a team. So how do we think this will end as the reports are McLaren don’t have get out clauses with Ricciado they appear to be on his side not the teams. Will be funny if McLaren announced him though. |

Looks like Piastri is doing now what Senna did at the dawn of his F1 career (1983): calling the shots.

Alpine had a problem. 3 drivers (a 2x WDC, highly rated rookie and midfielder) for 2 seats.
Today, midfielder driver remains in the Alpine stable for 2 seats. Cyril looks like a genius now.

This is so entertaining.
Possibly some legendary trolling by Alonso.

Well on one hand I can understand why Alpine only offered ALO and one plus one contract, as much as I think ALO is absolutely fantastic for F1 in general BUT, yes, the Ocon contract that is too long is the culprit for Alpine's situation right now, not to mention Ocon being a clear Douche bag against ALO where being a Team player only works for him if it is in his favor. Defending like a pussy cat against others but like a Lion against ALO and some indications that Alpine is favoring Ocon. Can't help to think that ALO is smirking with this situation.

While most here don't follow Indycar, I think you'll find this parallel interesting.
The same exact thing just happened in Indycar. Last year's champion, Alex Palou, signs with McLaren while his present team, Chip Ganassi Racing, makes the announcement that he's coming back with them...only to have him deny it. |
