Learning from your mistakes: What's something you've done that others should NOT do?
Pretty self explanatory title. I sort of stumbled across a subreddit called "internet parents" and a similar thread to this on another forum, figured I'd start one here too.
In a similar vein as this (highly awesome and wholesome) guy's YouTube channel called "Dad, how do I?"...what are some things that you would tell someone "DON'T do this"? Serious thread - let's save the "don't get married" jokes and whatnot for a different thread. Obviously there may still be some minor disagreements on various recommendations but let's at least try to be mostly serious here.

Expect anything from anyone. Expectations are the thief of joy and the moment you truly place expectations on someone you are setting yourself up for failure as you are relying on your fellow man.

Don’t try to change someone else when you observe them performing obviously harmful acts to themselves (over drinking, overeating, zero exercise are just a few examples).
People need to hit their own bottoms and come to their own realizations, even if it puts them in the hospital or the grave. Last edited by chassis; 08-01-2021 at 04:23 PM.. |

Don't spend precious years of your life trying to make miserable people happy. At some point it is about you and your happiness.
Funny thing, when I adopted that attitude I was blessed with someone that isn't miserable to share my life with.

Do NOT put off signing up for a 401(k) as soon as you are eligible. Young me said that retirement was many years away, and older me now has a severely-underfunded retirement account.....

-Rode a dirt bike without safety gear
-Touched a hot exhaust manifold while working on a car that was just running -Slept with an ex I hadn't seen in 7 years thinking she had actually changed -Welded in short sleeves -Used a grinder to cut metal with poor fitting safety glasses (having the metal drilled out of my eye was fun) -Went to an interview after I injured my back and was on heavy meds (still got the job) -Told a single mom co-worker I could do the brakes on her rusty car, ended up hitting myself in the forehead when a wrench slipped, going to the ER, and missing a week of work because of a concussion.

Don't buy a beaten car namely a Jaguar unless you happen to know Edward China or Anthony Amstead .

Never miss an opportunity to shut your mouth and listen.
Never avoid an uncomfortable conversation. Never let a day of your life go by, without telling the people closest to you, that you love them. Also, never use the toilet after eating ghost peppers, without washing your hands first. I can not begin to explain just exactly how important this is.....especially if you have sex after you leave the bathroom. |

Here's is one of the greatest things about being a small child: You have not developed fear.
You gotta go through some sh*t, to end up realizing 'I don't wanna get through that again'. I remember liked to jump off some sheds, run and see like some dangerous small snakes and nun-chuck 'em... And that was till I jumped off that shed, slipped, landed on the fence, blew out a shoulder and got bitten by a snake. Then I stopped doing that stuff.

Along this same theme, if you have an option to have your account "managed", just do it. My wife and I waited until way late in the game and the rates of return are noticeably better with our accounts being professionally managed than what we were able to do ourselves with our meager knowledge on investment strategies.
