Just in time they are forcing retirement of the old expensive Mac Towers they were selling back in 2008.
Apple no longer allows any new updates / will not load OS High Sierra. Imagine that! |

Uh.. For that spec you get:
- Xeon W2165 ($2500) - 128GB RAM ($1600) - 4TB SSD ($2000) - 27" 5K LCD ($1300) - Radeon Pro Vega 64 ($1500) Thats about $9K in raw parts already (those prices above are street prices). Add to that the following to make a working system: - workstation class motherboard with RAID ($500) - 10GbE ethernet card ($500) - USB-C ($100) - workstation class Case & Power ($600) - wireless keyboard and TouchPad ($200) Now we're close to $11K in raw parts.. Add labor to build it and Windows Pro 64bit to run on it, and then add a warranty, and you're getting close to that $13K price tag (the 14K includes Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro software packages so don't count). That makes this machine actually a market rate build, no huge Apple tax, and note that if you build it, you cant run MacOS or Thunderbolt 3 devices easily (Hackintosh machines are a pain to run/maintain). Thanks, S. |

The PC version is upgradeable while the Mac is sealed (though it looks like if you get past the glued together case the RAM may actually be upgradeable but would void your warranty). So you're required to get everything at purchase versus being able to upgrade later for potentially lower cost and faster components released in the future. EDIT: Apparently you can upgrade the RAM after the fact but only at apple.

Does it come pre-loaded with the latest version of itunes, or do you have to update that when you bring it home?

You also have to realize that unless you’re doing work that benefits from all those cores, you’re wasting money. As stated above the raw parts alone, before assembly and manufacture are almost as much as an iMac Pro, making it somewhat of a value. I think Apple is recommending 8 or 10 cores for most people so it should cost you half the fully loaded price. I was considering a base model. I have a base 27” iMac and love it but would like to do things like run Windows and VMs on it and as it is currently spec’d cant really handle all that smoothly/quickly.

So the modular Mac Pro is made in a the US (though really more like assembled here with the third party oem components supplied for it made in China). Is the iMac pro also made here or in China due to no Apple tax and therefore boosted margins justifying higher cost of American blue collar workforce?

I hate Apple because they're arrogant pieces of ______ (you fill in the blank).
Will not buy their products for myself (but have been forced to for my wife). I will however consider investing in them. I'm able to put my personal hatred aside if it means making money. |
