both are stock.....
what would the results be in a straight line from zero to about 80? i know that the cayman would eat us alive in the twisties, but i have always wondered about the straight line races....

Makes a big difference on the tranny of the P-car... Porsche claims 0-60 for 6MT is 5.1 and Tiptronic is 5.8. BMW claims 5.3 for 6MT and 5.5 for Step...I think most of us would agree that the tests in magazine show that the 335 gets to 60 a little quicker than what BMW claims. That said 6MT vs. 6MT it would be very very close. Step vs Tip should be close too. 6MT vs Tip should go to the BMW.
I have no problem saying that the BMW probably has a straight line drag advantage... These are the two cars that I debated on...but, as I built my Cayman S it sticked at almost $80K. Plus the N54 is much more tunable and could be made to be much quicker than the Porsche for reasonable money.

If both are stock then the Cayman S should be the quicker to 80mph and possible even up to 120mph. It will get far better traction off the line and has already been pitted against a Z4m by one of the US magazines where the Porsche was the quicker in the 1/4mile run.

The only Thing I will say is that the Cayman will not suffer traction issues that might cause the 335i problems, so best tackle one from a rolling start instead of at the lights. This has always been a problem for BMWs in my opinion, they are lighting fast but are difficult to always get off the line properly.
I know I will not be taking on an RS4 when my M3 comes as I doubt from the lights I will stand much of a chance based on my experience of both cars and the same goes for the 997S. |

I have gone up against a friend's cayman S (manual) a few times.
In the straight - I always beat him. In the twisties - he eats me for breakfast. We have driven each other's cars and he loves the 335 but since he could afford 2 cars he bought a Cayman S and a Merc C200. He reckons if he had to buy only one car (like me) it would be the 335. |

Cayman S engine is suck.. you cant really do anything to it. Unless you are really to break the engine.. Porsche always have that issue with their Cayman S. |

I agree it's not the sort of thing that is easily worked on or improved from a performance view point but there is a Turbo version coming I believe, either World Car Fans or another website stated it. The only problem with it will be the sticker price. |

There's a reason you can get 996s for the same money as 80s vintage 911s, and less than 90s cars. The cars are still good to drive, but they aren't as well built or appointed as previous generations. |

![]() Porsche don't make $20K on each 997, maybe on a 997tt it's possible but not on the majority of the 911s their sale. Also Porsche make a lot more than 20,000 cars per year, it's more like 100,000+ units per year and rising. I usually only speak about things when I have a reasonably good grasp of what I am talking about. P.S. Here 2006 units figures in case you doubt what I am saying. ![]() http://findarticles.com/p/articles/m...6/ai_n16499495 |
