Latest lame comparison: 325i v. new GTI ("my fast doesn't like bimmers!")
I must admit, those "fast" commercials have really gotten to me.
"Sweety, it's really hard to enjoy the sound of the engine with all that yackin'." I love them. And to those that consider them sexist, my wife thinks they're funny too. So, I love my 325i, but I salivate over the thought of the DSG transmission. Plus, a torquey engine with no lag, 25/31 mpg, german engineering, starts in the low $20k's. What's not to like? Well, definately the FWD, of course. Also, there will a 4-door GTI in the spring. Opinions? websites: http://www.myfastgti.com/ http://www.projectfast.com/ PS Where can I get a "fast"? EDIT: Thanks frog, my "speed" should be "fast". <I have been waiting my whole life to type that sentence! >

i completely agree. i've been always a fan of GTIs and i like the new one the best. i almost wanna go to a VW dealership just to test drive one just to see how it compares to older GTIs.
did you see the "unpimp my ride" commercials? i thought they were hilarious! i have to disagree about the price. when i when to their website and configured one with options that i wanted (including leather seats and navigation, musts for me) it came to over $27k which is ridiculously to a 325i and way far from being a "people's car." if they kept the price down, i think it'd be a lot more appealing to people. i also think that is why BMW doesn't want to bring the 1-series here, i just don't see people buying a $30k+ hatchback...

also, just like the new Porsche, it really surprised me that their DSG is faster than regular manual tranny (by 0.3 seconds).

On another note, I was suprised to find out that while my bmwcca local chapter's president loves his E34 M5, his daily driver is a GTI.

The whole "fast" concept is actually really a good one, the character is actually the original "rabbit" the GTI used to be but evolved into a modern and a bit more evil concept, the 20th edition had the rabbit on it, as did the first. The new director of marketing and advertisement is Kerri (i can't remember her last name at the moment) who held the same position at MINI and led all of the initial MINI publicity and marketing until VW came in and out bid MINI for her. I think that the ads are great and definitely give a sense of empowerment and overall emotional appeal to the car, something that VW lacked. I used to have a second gen and never went with the 3rd gen or further because the handling was not what it was prior, overall I like the car and what they did with it. I am going to take it for a spin when I get a chance but with the DSG it has to be great, the A3 is at least!

As soon as the 5dr hit's I'm buying a candy white w/ DSG as the wife's commuter car. Yeah, "for the wife". Like buying her a new circular saw.
She does need something more economical to drive to work, but she might as well have some fun doing it. And then I can drive it every now and then too. |

My buddy was looking for a "fast" on ebay. Apparently they were given to a bunch of olympic atheletes. There were about 600 produced in the world and are getting bid up to $400 on ebay, i guess it all depends on how bad you want one!

The price climbs damn quickly. If these things were RWD or AWD, I'd be so much more tempted to look at them. As it is, $26k-28k for a FWD car with a 200 hp 4 pot is just too much.

This concept is both funny and likeable, because we all know it's true. I see that a few members are not only constantly in touch with their fast, they are controlled by it.
Whenever I pull up next to a street racer I know I can blow away, my fast eggs me to race only if the kid punches it, but my fast knows he's wasting his time. My fast knows where he stands. Everywhere I go, I take him with me--boxed in my trunk. |

For those talking about pricing, go look at the invoice ... when was the last time you EVER heard of anybody paying msrp for a VW? Give it about 2mo for the initial dealer self imposed gouge to wear off, and there's quite a few sitting on each lot. And then go and do the rizzo, $500 over invoice email/fax to each dealer in the area.
We've only got 3 BMW dealers in the region but about a gazillion VW dealers. I don't doubt I'll be paying $500 over or less. And who the HELL would option out a VW? Do you guys not know how bad the resale on these things are? Get DSG and a sunroof and keep it simple. |

I tried a 2 door GTI today. It's great! The seats are nice (cloth), the shifter and clutch shorter than a BMW, and there is no torque steer. I'd buy one for 30k CDN. Its got cool 17" wheels and a nice interior.
I'd get a 4 door though for $700cdn more!
