Drove M3 Today
I was driving home and I looked in my rear view and saw the grill and hood of an M3...I gave the guy a hard time and accelerated hard pulling into our neighborhood - he pulled along side and waved - I stalker followed him home and we chatted about the cars...nice guy - he says 'you wanna drive it'...
Hell yes...the car has a great feel and was much tighter than my 335 - the shorter travel on the clutch and shifter reminded me of my 97 M3. The sound of the V8 makes you giggle...power is very smooth and available - no surge of the turbo but more of a pull - it really feels like you can rev forever. The 335 "felt" like it could hang through mid-speed...maybe 3rd at 4000 RPM up through 90-100mph on the 335 - but the M3 seems to have a much broader sweet spot and better throttle response (part engine but also just simply the fly by wire throttle is set nice and twitchy). From a looks perspective - i like the 335 better...the M3 sat a little tall...before I drove it - I was thinking about suspension, short shifter, and tuning on the 335...but the V8 may be the deciding factor - you can't easily make up that difference. |

For some reason I feel like the new M3 is just not head and shoulders above the lesser 3 series (335) to justify the extra $20k like the old M3's were. Granted I haven't tracked both and I'm sure its a completely different animal around a course but $20k definitely isn't chump change.

If priced only $10k more, would I buy a M3? Yes. Priced $20k more? No. Even when I try and talk myself into it and knowing I can afford it, I can't do it. Just doesn't carry that mystique the previous M3 had.

Here in Argentina, a 335i costs $79k and the M3 is priced at $130k... That's a $51k difference! I can't justify paying $50k extra for the M3! I know it's a great car, better than the 335i. But I can almost buy a brand new 130iM-Sport with that price difference!

I think they need to refocus the M3. Bring down the price, take out all of the extra electronics and if anything make it less luxurious. Its not motorsport focused anymore, its just a GT that can be fast when necessary.

Agreed. I was shocked that it weighs more than a 335. If not for the "carbon fiber roof" how much would it really weigh?

I can afford a 335...the M3, I can swing...so that last 20K is more significant than the first 50K...at this point I am not sure it is "worth" it to me...I would have to give something else up...I guess it depends on what I would have to give up...
