MagnaFlow's Rich Waitas explains all things exhaust on /Drive show
MagnaFlow's Richard Waitas sat down with /Drive for an episode of /Engineered to show and tell about how exhausts work. It's a pretty comprehensive look at what goes into moving exhaust gases from your engine to the exhaust tip. Even if you know a lot about exhausts, you might find some it enlightening and surprising. If you've been thinking exhausts lately—MagnaFlow or otherwise—it's a great overview to let you consider what will work best for your car and what you want do with it.

Good video...making me question my Turner style muffler delete on my X5M.

There are pluses and minuses to every exhaust, really. A muffler delete saves weight and might produce a sound you like; those are important things to consider. You might get a little bit of power loss from the long piping, but if you're driving the car daily, that may not be something that's affecting driveability significantly. It's all about weighing what you want from the exhaust system.

I'm sure there will be some weight savings, but I'm mostly trying to hear the turbos better while having little to zero restrictions. I'm going to install an x-pipe in the same place the F10 M5 has one since the E70 X5M has none, and then I've bought plenty of 3" stainless steel piping and tips. I've only heard a few videos of catless & muffler deleted X5M's, but I've yet to hear how it'll be inside the vehicle.
Not that it relates since it's a completely different vehicle, but I've got Magnaflow cats, then did a resonator delete (replaced with an x-pipe) and Magnaflow 14816's on my 98 740iL...it sounded like ass!! I put the factory resonator back in and it's perfect, about as close to an E39 M5 as I can get it without an S62 swap. Point being is I'm slightly worried is the X5M will drone inside and if I should look into a 12"-16" resonator. Last edited by m5james; 11-11-2015 at 03:43 AM.. |

I have always liked Magnaflow for two reasons, good pricing and good fitment. You guys charge the same price for a Mustang exhaust system as you would for a bimmer system. No BMW tax charged, which is rare in the exhaust market.
Before joining bimmerpost, I was a member of a few Infiniti forums. Not once did I read a review about bad fitment which means, your company obviously takes quality assurance seriously. I feel Magnaflow has an excellent opportunity to make money from the import car owners. Let's take BMW for example. I used to own a F10 535i, which magnaflow makes an exhaust system for. It was not popular with forum members and I would guess it's not one of your top moving items. The problem with the system is the lack of a wow factor. A straight through design might make a Vette sound like a beast, but it may not offer the same results on a 3 liter inline 6. Car forums are a great way to figure out what owners want. Most car modders are on car forums. Using the F10 as an example again, your competitors are companies like Eisenmann and Meisterschaft and Akrapovic, and BMW M performance. All are very expensive options and all sound completely different than your Magnaflow exhaust. They all offer a more aggressive and somewhat exotic sound. Do they offer better performance than Magnaflow? Probably not. Look at the vendor ads on any bimmerpost subforum, their systems are claiming almost no HP/TQ gains, but it seems that owners don't care. People want something that sounds good. Meisterschaft is a company with a HORRIBLE and troubled start. Look what they're able to accomplish. I don't trust their quality, but they sound great. I'm not sure but I don't think they spend much more on R&D to justify their upcharge. Not only do they sound great to me, but they sound great to other BMW owners. I think Magnaflow needs to figure out what kind of sound specific car owners want. Make vette exhaust for vette owners and make M3 exhaust for M3 owners. Put performance first, but go for what the majority of what owners want to hear. Sound is the deciding factor, not power. Magnaflow obviously knows how to make power, just make it sound like an akrapovic, but cheaper. You're already here on the forum so you're either a BMW fan, a BMW owner or here to research. This post just reflects my opinion and I'm trying to be helpful, so I hope this helps |
