Yes you can afford it but do you really want to put that much into a depreciating asset? I would go with a lease option and reassess in 3-4 years from now. Like many have said, save it for the house or retirement. Renting in a hot housing market means you're probably going to be paying more and more down the road and in the end you have nothing.
Take $10K and invest it in the stock market and use the other $10K for the 1st year's lease payments on the M. It is key to build equity for your future or at least have a plan. The earlier you start the better. I'm 28 and paid off my student debt at 25 and have now saved a good amount of money over the past 3 years. I'm looking to buy my first home next year.

The fact that you want to be the first one to fart in your car or you will only drive a green car with a blue interior or you don't want to look for a used car or you're afraid what someone MAY have done to the car before you or you have an addiction to new car smell are all valid reasons to buy a new car. That doesn't mean they are good financial reasons. |

I would take a similarly equipped 328 over a 335. Actually if I had a choice I would take a 128 over either. I just prefer the feel of a NA engine.

If you have enough money after you max out your 401k and your Roth IRA contributions and any other investments you feel necessary for your retirement then go for it. Otherwise, get some more monthly income.

Then once you get into investments, you never feel like you're investing enough Because when you see that growth curve you can't help but tell yourself why you didn't invest even more! I wish I was a trust fund baby so I don't have to worry about my retirement funds and just go buy the new R8 today

I'm surprised so many people here make over 130K and above!
Real talk, man- you only live once. Lease the car- don't buy. These cars are only as good as their warranties are worth anyways. Owning property isn't for everyone at such a young age , and I bought property before the luxury ride. (Bought in my early 20s, am now 28) Imagine how pissed off you'd be dead knowing you died buying a home knowing damn well a car would make you happier right now? As long as the payment doesn't affect your way of living, & If driving the car will make you happier than owning a home for the next 2/3 years- then I say go for it.

Buying a used car is a massive pain, especially for German cars if you're particular about options and colors. That said, if none of that is a big deal to him and having the latest and greatest software and features aren't an issue, then buying CPO isn't a bad idea depending on interest rates. Rates tend to be higher for used cars vs new so how much you're financing plays a big role too. If you're going to drive it until the wheels fall off then it doesn't really matter whether or not you buy used vs new. Honestly OP, just lease the thing and keep that $40k in the bank. Have fun and enjoy life. Sure you can buy a fast car once you retire but you won't enjoy it nearly as much. ...I am assuming you have $40k in non-retirement accounts as well as additional funds in retirement accounts as well because seriously don't neglect that. |
