The people who blaspheme here arrogant, are very naive and have apparently no idea how innovation can run in the car branch. You need more or less only 3 things:
  • the will to come to the top of a branch
  • the wherewithal and willingness to invest in exclusive and unique niche products, which then have a positive impact on the brand image
  • a wise head which has the relevant experience and expertise and is allowed a free hand
All three points are given at Hyundai now ... the first two unequivocally, considering where Hyundai once was and where they are now already arrived ... and the third point I actually also have no doubt because otherwise AB would not have gone to Hyundai.

Jaguar is still the best example of what is possible when the right people (among others an CEO with BMW genes) get an free hand, like Tata from India does ... not the expected downfall but success across the board and ultimately even profits for the whole Group (Cadillacs V-Cars are an other example). All things that will apparently not comprehend by the BMW AG in dealing with the M-GmbH, despite the fact that the above three Points are this, that M-GmbH have made great and have therefore not insignificant contribution to the sporty image of BMW.

That's probably why the name it "N".

In relation to motorsport governed by the FIA, Group N referred to a set of regulations providing 'standard' production vehicles for competition, often referred to as the "Showroom Class".

Hyundai love copying ....the most sincere form of flattery perhaps?

Personally I would never buy another Hyundai. And furthermore, I would never cross-shop a performance vehicle with a Korean manufacturer. It's all about sense of occasion when you get into a vehicle manufactured - or should I say engineered - by a particular marque. Pedigree > all.

It's going to take centuries to overcome the brand inferiority. Good luck to the Korean company but most performance enthusiast will still associate the brand with cheap junk.

No just a few decades... Again when BMW moved into the automotive market their initial cars where crap too. They also got fucked for a bit after WWII and got stuck making only pot/pans and home appliances for a few years.

I think this is great, The more competition BMW gets the better the price for the end consumer :-) Hyundai might not be great at sports cars yet, But if its cheap enough people will buy them, tune them just like people buy BMWs and tune them.

*Cheaper Price
*Cheaper Insurance
*Cheaper Parts
*RWD or AWD

Then i think BMW will have to pay a little bit attention to them, Even if they have a long way to go. So Kudos to Hyundai the more the merrier and the cheaper price it is for us :-)

Above is the official link to the Hyundai press release. The N stands for the test center name Namyang. Not for M+1... or not M.

The car seems to be very well thought out... and in fact, the press release indicates the veloster body is used to minimize the RD effort to get the car to be road going for testing. Otherwise, under the skin the car is a mid-engine rally car... Kind of like McLaren tried to do.

Can it beat an M car?
Who cares??? The Hyundai RM15 car in its development and potential reminds us of the fantastic Lancia Stratos... I.e. a car made to be mid-engine to solve / pulverize the competition of the WRC. This is a very specific goal. Not to be a competitor to the M3 or M2 or 1M or any kind of M car. On the road it may be a car that beats our imagination making 300 hp feel a lot stronger with its very stiff and "dreadful responsiveness."

Here is something on the Stratos... by the way a fantastic car for any enthusiast to admire.

Albert is an amazing engineer, and BMW was fortunate to have this guy on their M Development for the past 20+ years. He had a lot to do with the E30 and thankfully did have a lot to contribute to our F8x.

I wish him well, and a little competition only helps us consumers (READ: Keep innovating BMW, or Albert and others will blow the M-Division out of the water...)

I can't stop thinking about how awesome it would be to have a mid-engine hatch with 300 HP.

Anyone remember this little guy?

How about it's more modern cousin?

Agreed and well said! I do not understand all the hate, competition raises the level for everyone. You don't have to like the N models, you don't even have to buy an N model, but pressure keeps everyone on their toes.

Also, cost and brand have very little to do with the actual visceral experience of a car. My old technology E30 M3 puts a bigger smile on my face more often then my E92 M3 did. If the N models are done right (they appear to have the people and dedication to make this happen) they could be awesome enthusiast cars. In my opinion an awesome car is awesome, regardless of brand.

IMO, this concept is much more similar to the Renault 5 Turbo or Clio V6 Renault Sport. Both of these cars started out life as front-drive hatchbacks, just like the Veloster. The Stratos was a legit mid-engine coupé from the start. IMO, it's in a slightly different league from a sports car perspective. The Stratos was always kind of a Lamborghini-lite. It's no coincidence, seeing that Gandini was the primary designer for the Stratos project.

This is no accident:

BMW

HyuNdai

Middle letter. Just the fact how scientifically they've chosen the name shows that this will be a very serious machine.

Yes, but just because they havent yet entered the market of AMG/BMW, doesnt mean they can't. We live in a time of when mustangs and camaros are hanging and out performing m3's and AMGs. I dont see why Hyundai, with the right team and resources, cannot enter the market. I wouldnt be surprised if they release a car on par with the m3 performance wise, for significantly less to breach their entry.

There is a huge market for small performance cars and bmw, aside from the M2, which isnt exactly small, are not making anything to feed that market.
