Iowa is a must issue state. I got my permit in the mail about a week after applying.

Hi guise. Please give advice. I posted this in another thread but think this thread would be more relevant.
I'm turning 21 (legal age for handgun purchase) in a few months and have been considering purchasing a handgun for personal defense, but I'm torn. It isn't manufacturers and the stupid NRA that make me want one, it's incidents like this. I'm worried that some idiot will pull a gun on me on the road or something (call me paranoid if you want). I'm not interested in being a hero, but as someone who often has deep thoughts about life and wasted life around the world (not only due to guns), I'm not interested in getting shot. The conflict within is whether I think I can trust myself with a handgun. Will I get heated enough to pull a gun on someone during a conflict when they're not an imminent danger? Will I become a part of those statistics, like suicide, family homicide, accidental discharge injury, etc? Where would I carry? With CHL, I could carry on campus, but I'm not interested in that. Would handgun stay in car only? Will the handgun do more harm than good? Basically that's where I'm at. Also, I have shot guns before, including automatic AK47, but I'm only interested in purchasing one handgun. Nothing else. I was thinking a somewhat compact Glock or Sig Sauer, nothing too small though. |

Thats a question you have to answer. It boils down to personal responsibility. Do you feel you will be responsible with it or not. If you have concerns about the answer, I wouldn't. I will tell you thst permit owners cause the lowest percentage of gun crime of any measurable group, including police. I will also tell you legal gun owners with guns stop over 2 million crimes a year. Those statistcs don't make the news.

S&W Victory 22 with a Tandomkross trigger and a 10/22 takedown with a volquartzen trigger, both iron sights.
Turns out I shot 5th overall which isnt too bad for my first competition and everyone else had optics. Had a number of malfunctions due to shitty ammo however so I'm going to order some better CCI stuff for next time.

I can't tell you how many times I've had to explain the simple aspects of how a handgun functions. Then there are the women who have it locked in their mind they have to have a revolver because someone told them something about them never jamming..... Men were usually more open to advice, but women tend to be more stubborn when it comes to their first gun. Same with trying to explain that a .40 is going to be too much for them and to get a 9mm, but someone got it in their heads that 9mm might as well be shooting marshmellows at someone.

There was one lady that couldn't pass the range test either. It was a while ago, but I think you had to land three shots on a paper plate to pass. She literally couldn't hit the paper plate. Sometimes I wonder if people need more training on top of that class to be eligible for a CCW. |

Yeah it's comical really. There is no real standard for the shooting portion. The state requires 2 hrs of live fire training which doesn't mean much. We shot 50 rds each, some one handed, weak handed. Doing controlled doubles and stuff. Some people were missing a torso sized target from 20 ft away.... and they got certificates I'm sure.

A firearm is an inanimate object. It has no ability to think, make decisions or take actions. It can't influence you. If those topics are issues for you they probably already exist without adding a firearm to the mix.
