Yes, teams did mess with DRW designs as experiments by teams trying to one-up the Tyrrell Project 34 in the mid-1970's before FIA set a limit of 4 wheels per car.

I always wondered if the faster lap times were worth the tradeoff of slower pit stops changing six tires, or if the tire life was good enough where they didn't need to change fronts or could do one pair per stop alternating between them.

Another piece of radical engineering was Jim Hall's Chaparral "sucker car" in 1970, which ultimately wound up re-defining the moveable aero rules in many sanctioning bodies.

Back in the Tyrrell P34's era of F1 racing ('76/'77), pitting for tires (or for just about any reason) only happened if there was a problem.

In early '84 my unit was staged to deploy to Lebanon on short notice. In the military, anytime you leave the 'States and you're headed for somewhere other than a big US overseas base, you're going to be a human pincushion. We were all in single file, following the yellow tape line on the floor and having our throats and ears inspected and our junk felt-up and getting shot after shot...not the kind of shots we preferred, mind you. Coming up to the station where they used the "gun" on you, the guy in front of me was wobbling visibly and looking pretty peaked. As luck would have it, the gun's vial ran dry 2 or 3 guys in front of us. With all of us watching, the doctor very unceremoniously pitched the empty vial into the trash and screwed on a new vial, after which it's necessary to bleed the air out of the gun. He did this by firing several "shots" into a bucket about 10 feet away. The squeamish guy in front of me saw this and instantly fainted dead away; we caught him on the way down. The doctor, meanwhile, never missed a beat. He pulled the gun to the absolute end of where its air line would reach and gave the fainted guy his shot, in his fainted state, as if nothing had happened.
