Powell Library (where all this happened) is pretty social place to be. It's not the most quiet place to study. There are better places if you want quiet. When I was there I only went to powell to take naps between classes. Part of the blame should be on school as well for running that place so poorly. I mean the atmosphere there kind of allows people to think that talking on the phone is ok.

Though her complaints are reasonable, she singled out Asians as if all asians lack this common courtesy and manner. It's clear she knows nothing about asia and yet she decided to make her problem a asian problem. I bet people that were on the phone weren't Japanese. They are probably the most courteous and polite society there is.
Then she made some ignorant comments about asian families and how they raise their children and made retard imitation of the language.

To me, what was most offensive was... her constantly saying..."in America" "Us Americans" "If your going to go to UCLA..." "hordes of asian that gets accepted school" like she's alienating asian people and making it sound like they don't belong here. Like its her country its her school...

I do see your point. She shouldn't have put Asians on blast like she did. The only problem I had was when she said "ching ching chong," but I wasn't really offended. I saw it as a typical ignorant white people action. I'm sure I've misrepresented some random language before as well. Just shows her ignorance.

Another point that slightly offended me was her generalization that Asian parents go cook/clean for their kids on the weekend. I'm Asian, but don't really see this myself. But at the same time I can see some people doing that. Also, maybe they're just hiring maids to cook/clean.

Besides those two points, I didn't have any problem with her rant. I also get your point about her thinking UCLA belongs to America, and by extension belongs to her, an American. I don't think she has anymore right to go to UCLA than anyone else, but I do agree UC schools are OURS. It's a University of California; CA residents also have cheaper tuition. So in a way I don't disagree with her. Basically my point is that UCLA is an American school; when foreigners come here to study, they should follow the local customs/culture/rules.

I see her rant as calling out all of those people who lack common courtesy and are inconsiderate of others. She may have stereotyped Asians as the culprit, but I'm willing to bet 80+% of the people she saw talking on cell phones are Asian. I agree they probably were not Japanese but were Chinese exchange students from mainland China. I may have just stereotyped mainland Chinese, but at the same time I still stand behind my statement and think it's true. She just called it as she saw it. I don't think she should get reprimanded at all for what she said. Truth is the truth, even if she sounded like a ditz.

She could definitely have presented herself better, but I can see kernels of truth in her complaint.


Don't really see any further need to debate this though. We pretty much agree on the same thing. She sounds like dumb but has some merit in her rant.

From what I've observed, foreign students are usually much better at conforming to cultural standards than the local students themselves. I am making a fairly broad generalization, but the international students I encountered in college were usually quite polite and well-mannered.

On the other hand, most, if not all, of the 'trouble' (drug dealing, drunken debaucheries, trouble with the police, racial slurs, etc.) was caused by local, American students.

And I absolutely see nothing wrong with families helping out their children in college. In my culture in any case, your family takes care of you until you are truly on your feet (married and settled). And when your family gets older, you take care of them. That's why you never see Asian people kicking their parents and grandparents out of the house, and you rarely see their elders in 'retirement communities' aka nursing homes. It's that level of family/parental involvement that leads us to becoming educated and joining society as productive members. Isn't that what cultural values are all about? Do Americans really want us to move towards the American "culture" of ditching your family and getting out of the house the moment you hit 18?
