My wife had an Optima during the big engine fire scandal, so I'm still a little sour on the Korean brands. But they've definitely stepped up from a design and dynamics perspective.

I mean, they're not bad but when I worked at Kia there were so many Optimas, Sorentos, souls, Sportages, and Fortes in the Service center in need of new engines before 100k miles.

We sold a 2018 Kia Sorento(in 2019) that was a service loaner(it had like 3-4k miles on it) and that thing caught on fire the next month on the highway. The lady that brought the car called the sales guy WHILE THE CAR WAS ON FIREand asked him WTH SHE SHOULD DOHow is the sales guy supposed to come help you? I guess common sense is not so common

I think that burnt Sorento is still sitting in the back lot of the dealership covered in a tarp (so customers that walk the lot or driveway out in the back don't see that burnt Kia.

I'd rather buy a Toyota over a Kia in terms of reliability.

I don't know of anyone who thinks that Hyundai or Kia (or any other make for that matter) can match Toyota for reliability.

But the Kia does come with the 10 year powertrain warranty. That might be why there were so many cars in the dealership for a new engine. If a brand without such a warranty blows a motor, it is probably the end of that car so it won't be in the dealership for a motor replacement.

Very few ever have the ability to use the full 10 year powertrain warranty as a tiny number of people buy/lease a new car and keep it for 10 years and the warranty isn't transferable to the next owner. The idea that there are old cars lined up at the dealership waiting for new engines seems to be nothing more than speculation and I would like to see where this information came from.

The 10 years 100k mile powertrain warranty is transferable if the car is purchased certified pre-owned. If not, it is not transferable.

I worked at a Kia dealership for a year. So, I've seen what came in and out of the service center and what it was there for.

Every Monday, there would be a truck that came before closing time (9:00 pm) and dropped off a few big crates with an engine in them.

I worked at Napleton's Elgin Kia if anyone cares to look them up

While these are severe recalls, they are not uncommon amongst other brands, even BMW has done large recalls for fire risks, as well as N63 engines in general which received many recalls, and other brands such as Honda and Toyota have had severe recalls. Hyundai/Kia as a whole though still while maybe not as reliable as Toyota or Honda, are likely better than Nissan, most European and American brands.
Eh, the Optimas, Souls, Sorento, and Sportages that came in for new engines were probably between 2009-2017.

Majority of the Kias that needed an engine where the Souls, Sportage and Optimas. There weren't too many Sorentos that came in for an engine replacement.

You are not the first person who worked for Kia that has said they constantly are getting new engines at low mileage. There is a Kia mechanic on tiktok whos entire page is showing all the different cars that are getting new engines. I believe in one video he showed 22 replacement engines in the dealer at once.

I didn't even know tiktok would have a Kia mechanics on it

We had a separate body shop attached to our dealership that had a few Kia engines outback. So, there were some in the service department and some outback.
