They are "Heel Plates" made by Eagle. You attached them to the heels of your boots or shoes with the provided screws or nails for resistance to heel and sole wear. In the 1950's and 1960's they were made of metal, and I firmly believe that the majority of them were used by adolescent males who were looking for that additional touch of cool clicking when they strutted. As time went by they were made of rubber and polyurethane, and lost their cool factor. Never used them myself, and I laughed at the guys who did. When you've got it there is no need to flaunt it.

We called them 'taps' and my Mom had them put on my shoes to make the heels last longer. I was very young and I remember clicking on them and I enjoyed making the sound. When I got older, around 11 or 12, I started picking out my own shoes and they came without taps.

Speaking of taps, do any of you remember going to your favorite shoe store as a kid and getting your foot measured for your shoe size with one of these?

Of course, at Thom Mcan Shoes. Actually all the shoe stores used this little bench at the time. For big thrills we went to Sears, and spent hours looking into the radiation machine at our feet. It's a wonder that any of us made it to adulthood with humanoid feet.

Total flash from the past – I'd forgotten all about Thom McAn. It was a huge tv advertiser in the Bay Area back in the late-50s and into the mid-60s. I bought a pair once at their Market Street store in San Francisco.

During that period, I bought shoes from GallenKamp's* at Clement and 7th Ave. to run around in the neighborhood after school. The shoes were inexpensive and lasted only three weeks max. My mom let me buy Converse once I showed her they offered more bang for the buck. The Converse also fit better.

We got 3, one was local, KBSI TV23, channel 9. During weekday mornings I'd watch Captain Kangaroo on one of them, but channel 9 was the best on the weekends late at night (think 10 pm) because they played old horror films (Frankenstein, The Mummy, Creature from the Black Lagoon, etc) until the national anthem started and then the screen went to this, and then finally to snow.

Those were the days.

When the TV image got distorted: "Go kick the TV". Bang-bang-bang (frame).

And when you switched off the TV (button push), the screen was 'sucked into a black hole' as a dot, or kinda 'warped into hyperspeed':
