“No more mortgages meant people would be able to save or spend money on what they wanted. To kick off the party, a copy of the mortgage was burned to which symbolized their newly found freedom. Friends and family were usually invited and would bring gifts for the party host.”

Get off my lawn!
I got a ride to school most days to be honest. But it was super early because my grandfather needed to get to work. Then I stood outside by myself for an hour+ in frigid New England weather / snow. Spring and fall were nice I guess. Would have been better with a smart phone though.

I walked back and forth to school starting in kindergarten and thru HS. SoCal weather though so it wasn't bad.

The whole situation was involuntary, but at least they had the decency to make a few of us long-time employees small financial offers that we "shouldn't refuse" rather than being escorted out by security guards during the impending layoffs in a few weeks.

One of the benefits of being old is that we are a protected class in labor discrimination cases, so enticing people to leave voluntarily is probably cheaper than going through a few discrimination lawsuits.

I'm too young for Social Security with a retirement account that's severely under-funded, so I guess that I'll have to write a resume for the first time since Reagan was in the White House one of these days.

I did grab a souvenir as I closed my office door for the final time that seemed to be fitting for someone being tossed to the curb. Believe it or not, I had the same garbage can in my office since I started work there. I used a black magic marker to make it into an educational tool in 1985, and today's silly kids just look at it and scratch their heads because they don't understand computer science. It will certainly be a centerpiece in our Garage Mahal when we build it.....

I once worked for a specialty metals company which, when I started in 1984, had never had a layoff. My manager told me on my first day, "now your're in -- you have a job for life if you want it". Coming from the tech industry and having already been laid off twice, I just smiled. The very next year they had their first-ever "reduction in forces" and it shook those folks to their very cores.

Later on in my 15-year stint there, they had a few more rounds of staff reduction. They were very generous, paying out substantial amounts for time with the company, helping out with medical insurance costs, even paying equivalent SS amounts to those who were not yet of age to qualify. The perks of being let go were so good that some folks hung on longer than planned in the hopes of snagging them!

...when you buy a ticket for a concert and arrive late to avoid traffic and miss the opening act, watch the second act, and then leave early to beat the traffic and then watch a recent youtube video of the concert to see what you missed.

I did this last night with John Waite, Foreigner, and Styx.

In my younger years, I would have arrived early and been the last to leave.
