That said, they've collected approximately dick squat from all of us legal owners at this point. Somehow, in doing so, they've managed to spend roughly $100M on this already...at least that's what one news article mentioned. I think they've taken some inventory from stores (presumably bought and maybe that's part of the $100M, but I don't know), but I think next to no one as an individual has turned in any of their prohibited firearms. Now partially that's because you get grandfathered as an owner (can't use or sell them, but you can keep them as a nice paperweight as long as said paperweight is properly stored and locked up). In addition, for the newest ban, there is an amnesty in place until October 2025...which is right about when an election will be held if not sooner, and if current polls are any indication, the current Liberals should get removed from power, and I hope the Conservatives repeal all the bans. |

Ok, there seems to be a plethora of options for lighter weight hunting rifles - anyone have any opinions on what I should be looking at (must be able to get in Canada, so there's the wrinkle).
Ideally, with a scope, rail, rings I'd like to target a weight around 9lbs. Chambered for .308 since I like the versatility of that round. I know, it doesn't win any of the categories, but it does pretty well in all of them and its plentiful and as such, a little cheaper. So I like the round and I'm staying with it. No preaching 6.5 Creedmore please and no AR10 kind of variant - just the typical hunting rifle profile / stock. Currently, I've been considering the Savage 110 Ultralight (but I've heard the action is rough) or the Tikka T3x Lite (or up to the Veil). Leaning to Tikka, but anything else I should consider? Currently have a Rem 700 Milspec with the 5R barrel in .308, but with scope and that its coming in at 12.5 lbs. I have toyed with the idea of a new barrel (like Proof) which should reduce the weight to about 10lbs, maybe the stock too, but I think then I'm probably spending more than just buying a new rifle and selling the 700 (which I would do). |

Ordered one of these last week. Still waiting on the form 3 for it to ship to my dealer.
It's a B&T SPC9 SD-E Euro Contract. Supposedly it's overrun from a European agency who wanted the quietest 9mm platform possible. The barrel is only 6.7", so it's a factory SBR. The printed titanium suppressor is a two piece that tucks inside the handguard and wraps over the ported barrel. It's super niche, but I love B&T and SD guns. I'm hoping it's even quieter than my MP5SD!

For sure. I'm a sucker for their stuff. This will be my fifth (SPC9 SD-E, APC223, KH9 SD, GHM9 SD, APC 9 Pro).

KH9 in FDE is next on my list. You think it's worth the $3500?

Mostly a pistol and shotgun guy here and delving into ARs. This M-lock stuff has me a bit stumped. I’ve watched YouTube videos but still doesn’t make much sense. Or I’m just stupid. Anyone got a link to a really good M-lock for dummies video?

Okay.. M-LOK. You know Picatinny rails? At one point in time everyone had to have it. Quad rails (Quad meaning on top sides and bottom). So here comes along one idea to just bolt rails on when needed but some was designed specifically to that company's picatinny rail attachment to their rails. Then comes along KeyMod.. Standardizing slots to install rails, custom flashlight mounts, etc. It was open source and easy to use.. but I believe that some testing said it could take abuses like drop tests. I doubt it would fall off on normal usage for me.. Any case Magpul came out with their own MLOK. Also free but they required anyone using it to register with them. Very good design where you just stick it in the slot and screw it down. The rear part that is screwed into will rotate and stop at a 90 degree and mount it down. (Takes a bit getting use to for the first time installing). Well this might not be perfectly accurate but off of the top of my head..
Note I have registered with with Magpul and it was easy. They the technical measurements for the cut out and the matching mounting scheme.. though the data is out there already. I had designed MG42/MG3 optical mount using MLOK. Now if you were just asking to install MLOK.. Sorry for the explanation.. It's not too bad once you figure it out. Typically I screw the screw into the backing screw almost all the way down. Then I back it out a bit until I know the rear locking mount will rotate into the rail. The purpose is to allow it to rotate behind the rail slot your putting it into AND be able to hit the 90 degree stop. That stop will pull the rectangular part into the ( ) shaped slot. Hope that helps. |

Sometimes when screwing down the Mlok they do not go 100% 90 degrees against the Mlok opening, you will see what I mean. Usually you can hold them in place while screwing with an allen if needed, just needs a touch of pressure to keep them from rotating away from 90. Add Blue locktite them on top of the stuff that comes on many mlok threads on the fasteners, the thread locker that comes pre applied is worthless. You don't want any mlok attachment coming loose and shooting makes a lot of vibrations.

For the Covert? Where are you seeing $3500? AxArms has them for $3000. You just missed their MAP sale too, where I think he was selling them for $700 off. If you're patient, I think you could easily snag one for around $2500.

Anyone here got a SIG P365 Fuse yet? I'm not liking my Staccato C (it's too big) but the Fuse looks like it would be slimmer. Or I could grab an XMACRO kit and move my tiny 365 FCU into it.

Had an interesting night/morning... Story time below, thread-related discussion in bold way below.
I was having a tough time getting to sleep last night. Some show about catching smugglers on the tube and tossing and turning trying to get to sleep. Last I looked at the clock it was a bit after midnight but in a halfway-asleep state well after if not entirely until I was woken up for real. I was thinking about how I had left a few unlocked vehicles parked outside in our courtyard while I'm installing some things in the garage - bleh, I'll deal with it in the morning. We live in a rural area on some heavily wooded acreage on a dead-end private road with only the mailman and the brown truck knowing that the house is even there. We leave exterior lights on each night, and you'd have to be lost to even get to a point to see the lights. In my half-asleep state, I know I can hear some banging around. I chalk it up to these damn cats that we stash away in the laundry room adjacent to our bedroom, but unconsciously am thinking about the vehicles wondering if it really is the cats. I think I hear my wife leave the room, but that's common as our daughters have colds and she's probably just going to tuck them back in. Then I'm urgently woken up by my wife telling me that there is a young blonde girl banging on our front door. It's 3:30am... I jump out of bed to throw on my gym shorts and go to grab my pistol... "shit, my guns are on the other side of the house." We recently built this house; even though we moved in months ago, we still have some things we are figuring out - for this story, namely the gun safe and exterior security cameras. Unloaded guns are in the closet of an extra bedroom well out of reach of the girls (4 and 2) with mechanicals and ammo very much separated as a temporary "solution" until I select my safe. I KNOW. I'M STUPID. Of course this closet is also very much well separated from my current position which will require me to walk across the entire house through the all glass front / all glass rear common area leaving me completely vulnerable to whatever is beating on my front door. I grab my Monadnock baton I have in my closet, tell my wife to call 911, and venture out hoping for the best. Scared shitless, but adrenaline overpowers with the only thought being my family's safety at this point, mine be damned, but worried should something happen to me, my girls are done. Walking into the kitchen, I peer around the corner to get a view of the front door (2/3 glass door, sidelights, and transom surrounded by numerous 3060 windows with transoms - easy to see what's going on at my front door) and see what looks to be maybe a 14 year old girl drenched from the rain sobbing and beating on the door with the hazards flashing on our Toyota. My only thought is that this is some type of setup with additional people awaiting me to open the door hiding behind one of the vehicles. The hazard lights are disorienting, and I really don't know what's going on outside of my front porch and this girl. Deep breath, I take the phone from my wife to have 911 dispatch on the line, and I walk up to the door standing against the wall between a sidelight and the 3060 for "protection" and start the interrogation from inside through a closed, locked door. She repeatedly asks to come inside and keeps asking for "her" keys. It's becoming clear that she is zoinked out of her mind. She thinks my house is her house. She thinks my truck is her truck. I get her name, her date of birth (turns out today is her 23rd birthday - tiny girl that obviously has/had drug issues to be as small as she is). She keeps walking back out to the truck with its hazards going and getting inside to drive away, but then coming back to the door asking for "her" keys forgetting the ongoing conversation. She doesn't have her phone. She has no idea how she got to my house. It is like she was dropped from the sky from a different planet with the memory of a goldfish. I have no clue what this girl is on, but this is unbelievably surreal just how disassociated she is from the situation and the world. Is she mentally unstable? Is she on meth? Is she still trying to lure me to open the door for an attack? In my area, she likely could have already been shot had she gone to any other house at this time of night. Staying true to the mailman and brown truck theory, police show up only after driving well past my private road (I can see them driving to the equestrian farm through the woods - the only other residence remotely nearby); another conversation I'll be having with emergency services later today. Once police is in the courtyard and have the girl, I step outside to get a better understanding of the situation. I find some type of vape box thing, a hair scrunchie, and lip gloss on the ground outside the door. My truck door is open with hazards still going; I peek inside and am hit with a hard chemical smell. Like alcohol, but much more potent. We still don't know what it is. Mud and dirt is all over the front seats, screen, dash, plastics, and a couple switches/knobs are broken off. It's like she got in and started climbing all over everything. No apparent attempt at taking anything, just a good roll around? The iPad was still secure on the back of the headrest even. More cops show up. One is going through the truck with me and we find a straw with some white residue in it and some odd things in the purse she left on the passenger seat. I'm overhearing some of the radio chatter and police interview and catch a city name I recognize and she knows the name of this street. I interrupt and ask two questions - what color is your house and what is your dad's name? Both of which match the newly built house down the road from us, and I know that they recently moved from the city mentioned. Holy smokes, this is my new neighbor's daughter. I can only imagine what it must have been like as a father seeing headlights coming down your driveway in the middle of nowhere at this time of night to find police when you answer the door. He's a good dude, and was overly apologetic explaining that she has had sustained substance issues with multiple trips to rehab and tens of thousands of dollars spent trying to help her. If anything, I am relieved that this is someone we "know" and not a random crackhead that somehow found my house. The cops listed out a long list of things that she would be charged for, but I refused to press charges. I just want their family to get their stuff figured out. I wouldn't say that the cops were pushing me to press charges, but they were definitely in an "are you sure?" kind of mode when I said no. They were really surprised given all that went down. ANYWAY, this was one hell of a wake up call. This could have been MUCH different, and I am going to correct my firearm negligence TODAY. Like, hook the trailer up and go pick up a safe right now kind of today. Safe - I am looking at this ProVault 24 at Bass Pro. I'm a little weary on the electronic aspect; seems like a pretty critical failure point, but I know nothing about safes. I'm assuming that's a non-issue. I'm looking for something to hold a couple pistols and a few long guns plus shotgun. I'm looking at getting a long(er) range bolt action of sorts one day, but that's just a thought at this point with no direction on a specific rifle nor clear understanding of typical size and its respective safe size that would be needed. Ammo of course. Will probably toss some documents and the like that are currently in a firebox today. Ideally, I'd like something that opens to the left so that I can snug this up to a right corner in the closet, but given the space from door opening to the right exterior edge of the safe, that may not even be a point worth pushing as it still seems the door will open a full 90°. I like the pistol bags on the door. Does this safe look like something that is worth grabbing? I'm not looking for Area 51 level protection, just something to keep the girls out of and keep everything close to my bedroom. Should I look at something for bedside pistol in addition to? It would be nice to have everything in the single safe, however. I'm skeptical of these biometric handgun safes. Shotgun - I've been saying for years that I need to pick up a home defense/tactical shotgun. Is the tried and proven Mossberg pump the right pick up? Or should I be looking at semi-auto? Of course, I still want it to be "cool" and have some fun with it as we all do, but given its purpose I still want reliability at priority. What's the right shot for home? My hope is to drive out today and come home with new goodies, but my impatience is driven by this morning's experience more than anything. Cheers! |

Scary night indeed. I have that safe, very happy with it. As for shotguns I have several including a Benelli M4 (pricey but just a fun gun to have!), a Beretta A300 Ultima Patrol. The rest are sporting guns for hunting or busting clays.

If you want a pistol box, I recommend the Fort Knox (comes in 3 sizes). Pricey at $300, but it's very secure and has a simplex lock (no biometric crap, no batteries, extremely low failure likelihood). I actually have 2, and they're great for storing pistols throughout the house. Well worth the $ IMO
And funny enough, I'm prolonging buying my first shotgun (first long gun) because of the same issue - figuring out my safe is overwhelming. Last edited by Reborn_; 12-28-2024 at 10:41 AM.. |

Edit: Apologies, mine is the 18 gun safe, not the 24. The depth on both models is the same at 20 inches. So my door is 20 inches wide getting to the 40 inches when open. Mine 24 inches wide while the 24 you're looking at is 28.5 inches. I would assume you have the same 2 inches on either side of the door so maybe a 24.5 inch door which would get you to about 44.5 deep with the door open.

Re: safe size...
Get one probably twice the size you think you need. I bought one for the firearms I used to have that was big enough... UNTIL my wife decided she needed to put a plethora of her stuff in it! Your wife will find many things she needs to put in it. |

Why would you not press charges? The girl has a history of substance abuse and has been in and out of treatment, this is a perfect opportunity to scare her straight. Firearm wise, my strategy is to have them locked up when I’m not home and at least one nearby and available when I am home and next to the bed when sleeping.

Get the CS bro. You can easily sell your C any recoup most of the money spent (…especially to a CA resident since civilians can’t buy Staccato’s here unless it’s a PP sale). I am LOVING my CS.
