Atheists and educated non-Christians are generally much more knowledgeable about Christianity than those who practice it.

So ... if I took the average non-Christian and the average Christian, pit them against each other in a Jeopardy-style trivia contest on the contents of the Bible, the non-Christian would win? Doubtful.

[Note: I noticed that you said "educated", but I don't know what that means in this context. "Educated" as in has a college degree? If you mean, "educated" in terms of the Bible, then that would be a tautological statement (i.e. person who knows X is by definition more likely to know X than a person who only might know X). So, yes, if I found the foremost non-Christian expert on the Bible and pit him/her against the average Christian, I would expect the expert to win.]

When I say "educated" I mean Biblically educated, qualified by completeness of knowledge on the subject. As you point out a tautological statement, but why is that important? If Person A knows something and Person B may know something, but person B goes to church every week for the sake of receiving education on the Bible, spirituality and divinity, who wins? That is the cost of picking and choosing IMO.

To reframe the statement slightly, Christians are often (not always) stuck reading the Bible in reference to their faith, whereas a non-Christian can read it much more objectively and therefore take a more holistic message/interpretation/whatever from it. Furthermore there is no need for them to disregard the parts which don't agree with their worldview, or for them to esteem those which do.

FWIW, I'm not trying to be "that guy" here, haha.

How could you ever back up or validate that statement lol?

I would say that from my experience, there are crazy atheists/agnostics and crazy Christians. They give their respective "groups" a bad name.

Maybe that's what you're getting at.

You're correct that I would have trouble supporting that statement unless personal experiences count. However when I read that some woman thinks that Jesus penned the Bible as if it fell out the sky one day, and someone else then comes along and criticizes non-Christians for their supposed lack of Biblical knowledge, I have to take exception. It was a knee-jerk reaction on my part.

I wasn't trying to bust your balls.

I also believe that everything on that list, including the "Bible by Jesus," anecdote, is made up for entertainment purposes.

^^

That movie (The Gods Must Be Crazy) is awesome. They used to play it on Comedy Central, like a decade ago or so, all the time. Definitely worth watching for those who haven't seen!

The joke thread has gone religious - we're all going to hell for that! This must be the work of the evil Satan, and his boyfriend, Saddam Hussein.

Eh, I'd wager to say the vast majority of authors didn't/don't have printing presses (and in most cases thanks god for that!)... but regardless, my comment was about the particular question, not the general knowledge about Christianity (or any other religion).

Anyway, back on topic
