Agreed. I didn't think Hawaii was all that expensive all the times we went. Things do cost more but the differences are not really that shocking considering you're on vacation. If things were 2-3 times the price then sure but most are not.

Milk
It is the great milk myth. WE hear it all the time. If you go to a 7/11 or an ABC it is pricy. Safeway, Foodland etc same price as on mainland. Costco also. If you have a Costco card you are set. Gas cost for regular today is 3.99 at Costco 4.59 - 4.69 at anywhere else. It is worth joining just for the gas. It is low season now which means it is not as crowded - in reality except for Kaanapali area the beaches are never crowded by mainland standards. And they are very very nice. Just check the water conditions and ask about the south swell (if there is one). You will have a great time.

^ definitely. We'll remember to bring the Costco card. Thats where we went to get food and water when visiting the Big Island too. Maui sounds fun. I can't wait.

Costco is always a first stop after landing in OGG because its about a mile from the airport. They also sell alcohol there if your interested. Are you staying at a condo?

That's true. I was thinking the same thing- stop by Costco after we land and get snacks, alcohol and some alcohol. We're staying at the Maui Prince/Makena beach & golf resort hotel.

It was mentioned in the Maui Revealed book and on tripadvisor with raving reviews so I added it to the list. Sounds like a very good dinner show to go see. Glad you guys are giving it the thumbs up too.

If they ask you to sit in front and participate, DO IT! We got to and it was really cool to see the tricks up close. Even from 5 feet away I couldn't figure out how he was doing it!

We sat in front at a comedy show one time and it was really fun. We got picked on but we all laughed about it. |

Maui
What is nice is that the Makena resort is a mere mile from Steven Tyler's place and it's beach is called Turtle Town. Great snorkeling and it is where the Wraiss fish clean the turtles. Really nice beach and grounds. La Peruse bay is a couple of miles further south. We go there twice a week or so for the sunset. After the Costco stop you can also hit Wally World if you need small stuff. Make sure you hit a place called
Coconuts in Azeka plaza for lunch - best fish tacos on the island for sure. Just go straight up the beach north from where you are staying. Should be a hot rod and car show at Azeka that Friday night also. |

Check out Mauimalahini.blogspot.com. Has some stuff you could use. How long are you going to be on island? Maui Revealed is for real a great book - you can get one before or when you arrive. They used to ban it here on island but now have given up and sell it everywhere. Is still kind of resented by locals but whatever - everyone has a copy.

I'm planning my honeymoon for Maui the last week of November and first week of December. Any comment on the weather? From what I've been seeing online, it looks like its right in the transition between off and peak seasons. I'm just worried about it raining the entire time.

From what I've read any time is a good time to visit Hawaii. The fall and winter seasons bring a little bit more rain and the temperatures are a bit cooler but it's not a huge difference. I suppose that's why many people like to escape the winter and go to Hawaii during the colder months on the mainland.
Also, a question for you guys: I asked the hotel and I was told it would take about 2 hrs to drive to Haleakala National Park (to watch the sunrise). The nps site says that sunrise is about 6 am. What is the ideal time we should head out? |

Did you do the entire hike at the 7 pools? That was my favorite part of Maui although the employer paid trip to Grand Wailea didn't suck either haha.

You're talking about the Pipiwai trail to that huge waterfalls? We did that late in the day. When we came back down we went swimming in the first Sacred Pool (it got really dark about 20 minutes after that).
