The S65 short block (just the block-- no heads, cams, valves, etc) was lighter than the S54's short block. This was the basis of their marketing department's claim. The S65 long block (complete engine-- block, heads, cams, valves, vanos, etc) is heavier than the S54 long block. Pretty misleading to state the s65 is lighter than the s54, imo. That said, I don't think the specific component weight is that meaningful-- far more meaningful is the complete car weight. And, both engines are boat anchors compared to something truly light weight like, say, the N52.

(assuming M5) In their best tuned form (euro for the M5, CSL for the M3), which I assume everyone is running because it's only better and free, their SMGs are pretty indistinguishable.

My family has owned an E30 M3, E36 M3, E46 M3 and an E90 M3 (E36, E46, and E90 currently in the garage). And I've experienced driving (casual) and riding in (aggressive) the F80. To me, that E46 is absolute perfection. Out of all those cars, you can just tell it wants to be driven like it was meant to. It's a great casual driver but the second you want to go it is ready for you. It just drives like it's pissed off and I LOVE that. Pair that performance with a nice minimalistic interior, a wonderful suspension, and timeless looks...it's just a hell of a car.

I've owned every generation M3 and loved them all for different reasons...but by far the E46 M3 is the one I loved - and miss- most. Agree with others who have said it was ahead of it's time.

E92 M3 Coupe with Competition Package
E92 M3 Coupe with Competition Package. The red accents make it look pretty mean!
