When I first started working, there was a telex or teletype machine. You'd type your message and it would punch holes in a tape and then you connected and fed the tape through the machine.

I Just told my assistant to "send a telex, this is important" yesterday, just to see the look on her 24 year old face

And the fax machines where you had to put the phone into the "special slot" at both ends after speaking.

Cutting edge 1980's technology!

You remember the fax machine with the canister that you had to clip the paper into and it went round and round? 6 minutes a page. Damn, it stunk

Absolutely! Loved that smell! Sometimes the sheets were still wet.

...and there was no such thing as a surprise test, because everyone could smell the fresh dittos as soon as they walked into the classroom.

I sometimes wonder if the reason why we all didn't need Adderall was because we all sniffed dittos in school every day?????

X-ray machine in shoe stores. You insert your feet info a slot and then look down in a viewer and can see the bones and check the fit of the shoes. Very early memory for me... Do we now all get toe cancer due to the radiation exposure?

I spent a lot of my time in the Navy in the 1970s and early 1980s typing on a Model 28 teletype and working with those 5-level paper tapes. The machine itself had about a zillion parts to it -- a real mechanical wonder/nightmare. But when a good teletype maintenance tech had fine-tuned it, oh my I could type like lightning!

That's what the two terminals at our high school looked like. The mainframe was over in the other high school across town.

When I was at a doctor's appointment this morning, I noticed that the magazine rack in the waiting room was 100% empty and there were no magazines out on the tables. Looking around, every single person waiting (except me) was staring at their smart phone. Having a pile of magazines to entertain waiting patients is apparently now obsolete.

Someone had better warn those damn kids that there's gonna be hell to pay on my lawn if the public library doesn't have the regional daily newspapers to read for free when I finally reach retirement age.....

I usually bring a book. Yes, an actual book where you turn the pages. I hate reading on my phone.

I'm not much of a reader but my daughter sure is. She loves reading, but especially loves reading books. There's nothing like the real thing.

My book shelves are full, so I read Nook Books. I always have 1 or 2 or 3 going on my iPad. Keeps my so-called brain limber. Heh!
