It's totally osprey season out here on the bay. This was was flying along, hit the brakes in mid air and dove.

So I was waiting for an Osprey to return to its nest when I head an unmistakable growl in the air. I looked up and saw this coming and and had to fumble quickly with the camera to go from a high shutter speed, bird-in flight setting, to very slow speed for a prop aircraft. I was not prepared for this and had no idea it was in the area, so I'm lucky any of the shots came out. If you can, picture a one-legged guy standing out the door of his car aiming a massive 500 and 1D skyward while trying to stay upright! This was just pretty awesome to witness, much-less get a decent shot of.

Love the B-17, Ed. Glad you got to see it in good light. Excellent shot.

Great shot and hopefully worth the effort.
Well hopefully you had at least the door open to help you. I don't know if it was the same plane but I saw something like that ~1 week ago as I was driving down to Fremont on 680. I think it was over Union City/Hayward. Sadly, I thought about how slow it was flying and what they had to fly through during WWII. I think back in the day, Otis Spunkmeyer Cookies had flights on DC3's for awhile. You'd see them flying around every now and then.

Thanks guys. I looked it up tonight, and it is "Nine o nine" flying out of Buchanan Field in Concord this weekend, along with a B-25. I will have more appropriate gear on hand tomorrow in case I see it again. Yeah a B-17 cruised around 160 knots (about 180mph), and pretty much a sitting duck to anything shooting at it.

I'm still checking out the mirror less offerings. This was taken with a micro four thirds Olympus OM-D-E-M1 and the 12-50 zoom.

I'll be interested in your thoughts. I've been looking at the X-T1 and the OMD E-M1. Both have their advantages.

The Sony A7 is still a great option and the new Sony A6000 has promise also. The ability to adapt Canon glass to the Sony is a consideration also. I suspect Sony will announce an updated version of the A7 in the Fall. (I haven't heard any rumors to that effect, just a hunch on my part.) It seems the years of playing hard are catching up with me to the point of not being able to ride my motorcyle comfortably any longer, so the lighter weight equipment is more than appreciated by this seasoned citizen. If you'd like more specific details of my research PM me your contact info and we can talk at length. |

Brickell, Miami,
This is actually 2 shots combined from the TS-E 17, one landscape shot wasn't enough to get the top of the building and the street in it, so the very top of the image is actually from a 2nd shot shifted higher. Also it was my 2nd experiment with light painting, which you can see on the palm tree to the right of the photo, near the BB&T sign. I think I might need a more powerful flashlight though. David,
Yes, go get sucked into Candelpower forums or the variants. Flashlights are some serious business.

Thanks Mark.
@Weebl, yeah I started reading some light painting articles and stuff, decided to go with a Coast flashlight for my first proper light painting flashlight, but it's small. Will check those forums out. Definitely don't want to become a flashlight head, but having 2 or 3 of varying power and size will be useful. The one I got has focus beam ability, so even there I have more to play with and see how the results turn out. Thanks for the tip! |

It is cacti time, I've had it for decades and it has been in the family for some 40+ years. At least I'm the only one who gets a bloom.
In a day or so it will be gone. With the 135 it is hard to get the real color, a very pale pink on the inside.

Dozens of cranes like this line the waterfront at the shuttered Mare Island Naval Shipyard. They make ideal nesting sights for the re-surging Osprey population.

Last of my 3 shots from Brickell, Miami which I kept .. I found this use of the fisheye to be pretty cool. I try not to overuse this lens, but I feel this shot works. What do you guys think?
