I have a 4Runner myself. Love the thing. It's an older car, but it's bulletproof. Best part is that I paid only $3000 for it (should be worth more). It's a fantastic car, and I'm glad to have it.

The fact that it's so cheap means more $ to mod the M3.

Honestly, there are many people who run snow wheel/tire setup on a rwd car. I run a square 225 setup on my g37s (rwd) 6mt coupe. As long as the snow does not come above your front bumper you will be fine. As I have always heard:

awd + snow tires > rwd + snow tires > awd + all season > rwd + all season

+1000 I have a 1996 Chevy Tahoe. One owner, just went over 100K this month. Great truck, love it to death.

Cheap to buy. I bet money you save on insurance and purchase price vs. a CRV or other econobox SUV crap will cover the difference in gas price...

I wouldnt trust anything FWD based for winter duty. FWD is ok in snow, but anywhere an FWD econobox SUV can get you out of, your BMW can probably get you out of...

When someone says I need a car for winter, I think Tahoe/Explorer, I dont think CRV and RAV4 will cut it.

If you need car-based, go Subaru. If you want a truck get a truck, but CRVs and RAV4s arent good for anything.

Explorers are junk though

There are other factors involved, but my Audi A4 Quattro with all season tires would go through just about anything. My G35 coupe with 19" Blizzak snow tires will barely go through 3" of snow, and definitely not up steep hills.

That's weird because my g37 with 225 blizzack snow tires on a 19" wheel does fine in the snow. I live on an extremely steep hill that goes down to a somewhat main street so being able to get up and control my way down is key. I guess the underlying factor is the car itself.

I'm not dissing anyone getting a Rav4, but no joke, the only people I know who actually own one are females, and 2 gay guys whom I am friends with.

I would throw a 4Runner and Pathfinder in for considerations, though if it were me I would probably go for a Tahoe. I find many of the Japanese vehicles go rather thin on their paintjobs, and even though it is going to be your "junker" winter vehicle, I'd rather have something that will hold up a bit better to sand/rock/salt spray. You also can't beat the ease of maintenance and parts availability

Yeah I'm not trying to stereotype Rav4 drivers but I just found it funny that every time I know someone that owns a Rav4, it's either a woman, or someone who is homosexual.
