most ppl spend 2 or 3 semesters before transferring out. most schools require a minimum of 3.0 to transfer in.

3 C's isn't going to kill anyone. Just get used to college course load and make the effort to get better grades in the future. The key here is YOU making the effort to do better. You reap what you sow; just like now when you chose to go have fun instead of study. Learn time management. Also remember the 7 P's, prior and proper planning, prevents piss poor performance.

Half my friends in college were on academic probation after their first years. Not sure why or how, as many of them were taking GE's for college or pretty easy econ classes. I'd guess it was that freedom and laziness... What they did was just take more GEs in the summer and raise their GPAs above the 2.0 limit... wasn't that hard for them I think. They just needed a couple of B's.

My transition to college wasn't that bad. I was always in the middle-low pack in a very challenging high school... so the first couple of quarters in college were easy. Late second and third years were really hard without the support I had in HS, and my grades dipped. In my fourth year, I started to finish my GE's and took on a pretty interesting/easier minor, so my GPA started to go back up again. Stress levels... second and third year was okay-high. Some classes were just ridiculous and had unpredictable exams, while others were standard and the professors were straightforward... so of course that played into the stress. How did I deal with stress? Rest before Study. Study before Play. If I know a class is straightforward, I do everything I can to get that A.... if a class is unpredictable and causes significant stress, I do what I can and try to get that B/+.

lol housemates were engineering majors 30/100 was a B in some core classes.

i only had one series where the averages were always 35-50/100

Dude it's only your first quarter. Get your shit together, study and you'll do well. One thing I had a hard time getting used to was the fact that you can't study the night before an exam and expect to get an A on it. You need days of preparation otherwise it is far too overwhelming.

Two more semesters left for me. 30 credits of solid accounting courses left. Can't wait.

Same here except mine was a ghetto school. Overall the classes that brought me down, and still continue too, are the general required non-major ones. I'm at a 2 something right now myself. I miss first semester with all A's

How are you paying for college? IMO the best motivator is realizing that either 1) you are wasting your own money by fucking around, or 2) you eventually have to pay back all of your loans and if you don't pay attention now, you won't get a good job and then you are fucked for life.

im taking computer engineering and in high school i didnt study for a single test....somehow when the teachers explained it i understood it... evidently, its not the same in college man.
im doing awesome in 5/7 courses but im on the verge of failing 2 of them and i'm just as discouraged as u. The only thing we can do is try to motivate ourselves somehow, my motivation is all my cousins and brother are pretty set......lawyer, teacher, investment banker and my brothers in his second year and wants to get his cfa etc... so if i fail ill be the first fuck up and that;s cant happen LOL...
so0o0o gotta pick up the books and study all i can say.

The transition from high school was tough for me as well. It seems so much easier at a glance because you can do things like schedule to go to classes on JUST MWF or just TTh. What's not taken into consideration is that you are doing other things like...growing up. If you're not commuting and actually moved away from home, the freedom is both a blessing and a curse. Nobody tells you what to do anymore or wakes you up in the morning and because of that, you have a higher chance of screwing up. Also, if you're at a good school, you probably graduated in the top percentile of your class. Guess what? So did the other people in that school.

I messed up my first 2 quarters at my school, but my determination and will not to fail got me through with a double major and a double minor. I, too, was discouraged, but after I realized what was needed to succeed, I found my way through. Alot of it was organizing my time and realizing I needed to know how to properly balance things out. If I played too hard, I made sure that I made it up by studying more. If I studied way too much, I made sure I made time for myself so the stress wouldn't get to me. After that, things became routine.

Thanks everyone for the replys, i got in touch with my academic advisor and plan on retaking one of those C-'s.It was a five credit hour class so i'm hoping that it will make a nice difference. I've done a lot of thinking about what needs to be done, and what i can do to assure success, someone mentioned money as a motivator which got me to think about how hard i worked throughout high school at a fast food job 40+ hours a week so i could afford to go to college. (well without completely drowning myself in debt). I think in a way i needed this as an eye opener that college and high school are two very different things, and yes i am away at school and the freedom got to me, as well as a distraction from a certain party school ranking. Thanks for the motivation! The only way to go from here is up!

just curious where you went to school...At my state school I had a 4.0 as well, after transferring to a top 20 school its a whole different animal.

+1. First couple of years was where I boosted my GPA since I (apparently) adjusted faster to college life and its academic demands. Cornell Engineering Class of '97.

Best advice I can give:

1) Do homework/problem sets with a group of students that are smarter and more motivated than you. That way you can bounce ideas off of them, and they can teach you what you don't know. And said friends will help you with your homework/problem sets.

2) BUT, study for exams on your own, in a quiet place, away from people and distractions (unless you're completely lost in the class, in which case go back and study with said smarter and more motivated friends).

lol and you were prolly the kid who spent most of his time reading and fapping. I agree with working hard but if you plan on having fun, which you should, you are going to struggle a little.
