Company car - blessing and a curse when it’s not as nice as your own!

Weather has been a little warmer past few days and even in the pouring rain yesterday I averaged 3.3 over a 100 miles. This is quite impressive, implying a total range of ~270. Have no doubts, in the summer and no rain, this car will easily pull 3.6-3.7 - 300 miles maybe more.

Oh it totally will. Like we discussed before these cars eat traffic for breakfast range wise. Even if we get a frigid spell you will be just fine with plenty to spare .

That’s one way to get an ICE that’s cheaper to run than an EV lol.

I got up to 2.7 yesterday with maximum efficient mode. It was only in the 40’s so I didn’t need the heat.

Efficiency & Range 2024 BMW i5 M60

Hopefully I’m doing this correctly. Driving thus far includes mostly in and around town and some HWY driving. I’m in AZ and have not made a trip to San Diego, CA. Purchased i5 a month ago and have experienced a range of between 275 to 302. My drive mode is mostly set to Efficient or Personal “B”. I used Sport mode a few times and generally do not drive aggressively. I’m pleased with results so far.

2024 BMW i5 M50

Winter in Arizona may be a bit different but all is good with range and efficiency. After about one month range has been between 275 and 302 using mostly Efficient, Personal and Sport just a bit. Efficiency numbers are to my liking as well.

Here is my December number, and my 2024 overall number.

The colder weather and hilly area around me keeps my efficiency modest.

Here are mine for December and the total for 2024. I live with elevation changes every time I drive and the weather is cold in northwest Washington. Also, I have fun driving.

I think I figured out how Richard gets the amazing efficiency numbers for an M60. I bet he has cut out holes in the floor on the drivers side and Fred Flintstones his way around, but not for the braking!

20-22 degrees this AM, supposedly 20mph winds although I did not really feel it when driving.

Avg 2.7/kw
49miles
1hr 5 min
Avg speed 45.3
Temp 69-70
Preconditioned before leaving
Heated steering on most of trip.

Drove normally, with some brief spirited accelerations at times, possibly even breaking triple digits a time or two .

Range is totally fine for winter not even close to my fears.

Is that just the "downhill" half of your commute? Please share the other "uphill" half when you go back home today.

For example, yesterday when I went to tennis, my efficiency when I arrived there was 4.5 mi/kWh (the "downhill" leg). Sometimes I can even get into the fives and sixes. However, the trip back home was only 3.2 mi/kWh (the "uphill" leg). When I use the app's merge feature for these two trips, overall the round trip is 3.8 mi/kWh, which is pretty good for this time of year - got some benefit yesterday because the temperature was in the 70s here.

What mode are you driving in? Personal with B selected?

Ask and ye shall receive, here’s the return. Morning commute - clear skies mid 40’s to 50 ish at destination

Return commute - clear skies 60 to mid 50’s

I drove in personal mode using B one pedal driving. Honestly I sometimes use efficient but it’s perfectly possible to drive efficiently in any mode. I do have efficiency on my dash which helps me realize when I’m burning watts.

Very cool Richard, thanks for posting that info.

I'm always interested in the efficiency numbers and how they work for round-trips. Here are some pictures of a trip I took tonight. After work, my wife and I had to drive from our home in Santa Clarita, CA to the Northridge Hospital in the San Fernando valley. Here is some data about the trip.
  • It is about a 19 mile trip each way.
  • About 14 miles is 75 mph freeway.
  • About 5 miles is 40 mph streets.
  • My home is at an altitude of 1540 feet ASL.
  • The hospital is at an altitude of 764 feet ASL.
  • That's a difference of 776 feet.
  • For both trips, it was very windy (around 15 mph) and around 65 degrees F.
Here are the numbers I captured.

1. Just the freeway portion of the drive to the hospital. The numbers show it is the majority of the altitude difference.

2. The whole trip TO THE HOSPITAL.

3. The whole trip back home FROM THE HOSPITAL.

Name: Screenshot_20250107_214553_My BMW.jpg

4. The entire ROUND TRIP by merging the two trips in the myBMW app.

Pretty interesting stuff.

Nice analysis - the majority of my commute is on freeways. I’m at ~750ft ASL at home, and work is maybe 5ft ASL? On the way out I climb up to get to the Caldecott tunnel which is I think around 1,100ft. So there’s a bit of climbing and descending both ways.

I hope you’re staying safe SkykingUSA - the fires and windstorms look really bad down south.
