You can if you pay more. It is all relative. Most people never use the bandwidth they pay for anyway. I guess it is worth it if you play games or something.

It is all relative. Speed is relative to main carrier backbones, current traffic, etc. It can vary by 100% depending on when tests are run.
A cable company will certainly sell you a faster link, but they may be limited with their backbone with contract to upstream carriers. Good sales gimmick though. As long is web surfing is not lagging, little bandwidth is required by most.

For the majority of people, just remember that you're effectively limited by the 10/100BaseT connection running from your router to your cable modem, so you'll never see those super high rates.
100Mbp/s = (100,000,000 / 8) / 1024^2 = 11.92MBp/s is the maximum theoretical rate for a 100BaseT link. Real world rates will of course be slower still. |

I just read the FAQ at speedtest.net and I think this test sucks. They're using HTTP server latency measurements to try to determine bandwith. Here, try this instead:
