+1 JD Power has so many reports that are all over the map, so everyone can feel good about what they bought -- more importantly, so every manufacturer will pay them to quote one of their surveys. IMO, this makes JD Power surveys next to worthless.
FWIW, I have both an 06 BMW and an 06 Honda, each bought new. The BMW has been more reliable. YMMV.

I do agree with one thing on that chart, which is Land Rover coming in dead last. Those things are (very, very good looking) pieces of crap.

Wrong way to compare vehicles... problems per 100 vehicles??? Whats that? JD should compare problems per N vehicles per year..and then average that!! Then it may be a better rating IMO
I own a honda too.. never did anything other than regular maintenence.

My 2006 E90 330i 30000km has basically zero problems except water got in a headlamp and dealer just replaced them free.

I can't find the article, but that 'reliability' study used customer surveys, and all problems are weighted equally. So if someone says "my transmission failed" it counts the same as if someone said "my tires are too loud"
In fact, the #1 "problem" cited was wind noise, followed by road noise. I could imagine that many of the "problems" reported for BMW are by customers who don't understand that performance tires with a stiff sidewall are noisy and harsh over bumps. I personally find this to be a very flawed way to measure vehicle reliability, and the only utility of this study is marketing gimmick for the winners. I recommend that users looking for insight into mechanical breakdown frequency should try pricing mechanical breakdown insurance for comparable models and by looking at manufacturer warranty reserves |

The big problem with this study is that it cannot take owner characteristics into account. The blue-hairs (oldsters) drive Mercury, Cadillac, Buick, Jaguar. A higher % of BMW owners are maniacs like us, hence the lower reliability.
The CR data on reported problem areas is a more useful dataset, IMO.

Wow, this study definitely needs be to taken with a grain of salt. I"m surprised Honda is so low and I though Infiniti was better than that. Oh well.
