taiwan has a totally different culture, government system and even speak chinese with a different accent. taiwan values freedom, democracy and is a thoroughly modern first world country. china values oppression, communist party dictatorship, and the average person earns $3000 a year. i don't understand how people can consider taiwan and china as even remotely the same. |

I'm not here to argue politics and government. I was born in Hong Kong and don’t support communist in anyway, but denying your blood is just silly my friend. Yea, you’re right…if your great grandparents left China to Africa…then you’re black…ahahahaha If you stand as Taiwanese...thats great, value your country..but don't look down on other people.....at the end, you're still Chinese. I'm going to call myself Americanese from now on ...or maybe hongkongese

people have to start understanding the actions and human rights issues of the chinese government has nothing to do with the chinese people, i'm soo sick and tired of people saying how they wont want to donate to the earthquake victims which consists of 70 000 people who died, 2 million people homeless and 300 000 orphaned child all because they don't like the chinese government. People of china does not = the government.

But regardless, this thread is about donating to the earthquake victims... and I agree with someone that posted earlier that China has more than enough money to take care of themselves.. they just choose not to. and lastly, Taiwanese and Chinese languages are different... we don't have the annoying "R" sound after every word. |

china holds $1.6 trillion dollars in foreign currency reserves. that's just money that is literally sitting there (mostly in the form of us government bonds). china does not NEED donations. if they speak of money shortcomings, its just the communist government refusing to spend money to help their own people.

Wow, I donated to the Katrina disaster, and my money went to help the world's most powerful country. I just can't believe some people here.... If you drive a BMW, i'm sure you all can afford to donate a few bucks to any world disasters...

donating to burma is also a waste. there are literally hundreds of tons of supplies sitting on airfields in thailand unable to reach the people who really need it because the military government refuses to grant clearance for more foreign aid workers.

The Chinese government did an awesome job with helping the people. Probably the best any government has done for a major disaster so far. They've been accepting help from all countries and there's been 24/7 coverage of the situation. They even rescued American tourist and the American tourist commented how professional, friendly and helpful the Chinese were. They helped everyone, including the ethnic Tibetans who were affected by the earthquake. The goverment even built temporary houses for the earthquake victims, and you can't say that when Katrina happened.
The biggest embarassment are the Tibetans who bitch about stuff when the government already spent tens of billions of dollars for them with housing, healthcare, education and free this and free that. Each time there's a major disaster somewhere in the world, China would donate millions of dollars to a country. Doesn't matter what country, China will donate. |

Yes, after reading and watching from the mostly unbiased news from the some Western media and news from China. Just don't get your sh*t from CNN.
The Chinese are very friendly people. I've never met anyone who visited China and didn't like it. I'm talking about Americans and Canadians. |

The Dalai Lama supports the Olympics and he even supports China because without China, Tibet would be not survive. If there's cultural genocide, it's the Chinese in Indonesia. The Chinese aren't allowed to speak Chinese in public, Chinese signs are banned, Chinese names are banned including first names and surnames. Celebrating Chinese New Year in public is banned. The Chinese get beat up on the streets in Indonesia all the time. If you're not Indonesian, but Chinese visiting from another country, you have to pay a tax because you're ethnically Chinese if you visit Indonesia. Do you hear about this in the Western media?? No, because Western media doesn't seem to care about suffering Chinese in countries other than China. |

to say that the people in china is not accountable for the actions of their government is a poor excuse. maybe if they spoke up against their oppressive regime instead of spouting off propaganda and hyper nationalism mabe others will have more sympathy. I have more repect and sympathy for those murdered in tiannamen square.

china's biggest problem is that the current generation growing up there has no memories of tianamen square and the government has successfully suppressed any information about the incident. its shocking the number of young people from china who don't know the truth behind the incident. i've spoken to ones who believe that the tiannamen square uprising was instigated by foreigners seeking to destablize the country and destroy the socialist revolution.
it is sad that these chinese youths ferverently support the same government that used tanks and machineguns to massacre thousands of students their own age in 1989. that being said, the earthquake has had the positive effect of opening up the media slightly and raising the taboo topic of rampant communist party corruption. hopefully this new focus on china will let the overseas communists see what is wrong with their homeland and spread the message when they go home. |
