The 135i will have an Electronically Controlled Limited Slip Differential...
http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showt...electronic+LSD

Which apparently will make it's way up to the the 335i eventually.

See page 20 for more information...

I agree that it depends on your cash position and what you want, but I went the other way, the Cayman S IMO is a pain to drive daily; almost exhausting on longer runs. I am SO SO glad I got the M3 last year, SO glad.

It's getting kind of old watching the 335i and the 135i get rave reviews for beating underpowered competition. Wow, another N54 beat a car with 245hp and 201lb ft of torque around the track. The cayman's chassis was clearly designed for the cayman s, thats why it understeers that much without power. That's why when the car came out, there was no regular cayman. It's not farfetched to see why a car thats pushing 300lbft of torque and 300hp could outdo a base cayman around a track.

First the RX-8, now a base cayman. I, like most people here, would like to see it against a 350z or an E46 M3 or something that it doesnt have a 50+hp, 100+lbft torque advantage over.

A little off topic, but a dealership cannot keep your deposit if you do not buy the car. The only reason they want one is to make sure you're not a tire kicker. I think it's actually illegal for them to keep your money if you decide not to buy.

Who in their right mind would consider a 135i before even the basic Cayman. Sorry guys but I couldn't care if the Beemer was 5 seconds quicker and not just the 1 second it actually was, I still would pick the Porsche every single time.

In fact I can't think of a single reason why anyone would pick a 135i ahead of the 335i, it's as ugly as sin and hardly any cheaper.

I might be overreatcting here and i'm not sure why i even care, but...

people like you suck. admitting you rather pay more for less performance just because it carries the Porsche badge borders on idiotic. Sadly this is further proof that the M3 has become the new M5... this board is starting to collect a bunch of snooty a-holes who can't appreciate a "lesser" performance based vehicle because it doesn't carry the same status raising BS people like you seem to truly desire.

you talk to any true driving enthusiast and they'll emphatically agree that this is the right direction for BMW. Smaller, Faster, Better. It won't be long for tuned 135is to be lapping and pissing off owners of E9X ///Ms for much less cost... quite similar to the complaint of E46 ///M owners getting passed by it's E36 counterpart on the track.

don't get me wrong i have much love for the E90/92 in ///M form or not. It's exactly what I wanted to buy until a more driver focused 1 series came onto the radar.

I guess my main point is, let's have respect for everyone in the BMW family.

PS.

Man, don't beat around the bush, say what you mean.

The reason I would choose the Cayman over the 135i is the more thrilling experience, plain and simple. There is more to life than being quickest, that is unless you value speed over all else which in that case makes you not an enthusiast and more of a d1ck.

It's just a shame that such quality of controls would be lost on someone like you, no doubt we all know where you views on the 335i vs M3 debate stands.

I'm sorry if you disagree but to me the 1 series is one of the ugliest cars currently on sale today and that was why I made my original comment of why pick it over the 335i, the cost difference in small, especially so when you consider how much better looking the 3 series is in comparison.

No one could deny the figures, they are very impressive indeed. But then they would have to be for anyone to seriously consider paying the money being asked.

i appreciate your response as it explains your opinions in a much better light. i guess i've warmed up to the 1 series styling and see it resembling the E30 ///M, which i'd absolutely kill for if i could find one in decent shape around my salty winter city. i figured this is my best shot at getting a small sporty bimmer which i can tweak and tune for the track without having to give up all the luxury comforts most of us can't seem to live without.

And you'll never hear me argue against an ///M of any kind, i am completely aware they are a different breed no matter how much money you cram into a bimmer without the badge. call me nostalgic.

I disagree with you, they tested agaisnt the lexus 350 and beat it, also agaisnt the g37 and beat it and also against the S5 and it also beat it.

Additionally it also beated cars like the Audi rs4 at VIP lighting lap and also the porsche 911 turbo at hockeheim (I did not said nurburgring) so I really don't know what are you talking about.

It sounds to me that you lack on information. All the cars I mentioned above have more power than the 335i, please do you homework before you make those comments.

Really matter of opinion. Just like most considered the new 3 series as ugly and overgrown when it was released. A lot of people on E46M3 forum still calls the new M3 fat and boaty.

They are just sad because they are going to be old news and not the best anymore.. Just like people on 6MT.net raved how the G35 was so much better than the G37

i dont think i am alone on this one, but i think 5th gear sometimes makes up some really rediculous comparison tests. 135i vs base cayman? most comparison test are cayman vs z coupe and the cayman s vs z4 m coupe. some examples of crazy tests: Lamborghini Gallardo vs Duccati 999, mclaren f1 vs enzo on the street (comparing what? comfort? stereo system?) not to mention the average joe test drivers, made up test standards, and commentating while trying to set a hot lap, cross platform comparisons, i can go on for days
5th gear pretty much makes anyone look like an expert. wouldnt take anything on the show seriously especially when one of their "trade mark" tests is a drift contest.
not that i mind seeing cars burn some rubber, but not for comparison's sake
