Performace Poker Game Increases Before the Race
By: 24H Rennen Staff Wed 05/13/2015 Just a few more days to go to the ADAC Zurich 24h-Race, contested at the Nürburgring’s legendary Nordschleife (14th to 17th May). In the extremely short preparation period, the competitors attached great importance to not disclosing their true competitiveness. The brand-new Audis R8 LMS will battle it out with the proven BMWs Z4 GT3. On the grid, they will be joined by – inter alia – excellently prepared customer teams running Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 vehicles and a small Porsche 911 GT3 armada. But it also could become the race of one of the newcomers: Aston Martin, Bentley, Lexus and Nissan all will travel to ‘The Ring’ with competitive racing cars and in addition, there is a spectacular dark horse – the SCG 003c – that also could make for a major surprise. Many of the cars and teams involved already competed with one another in the 24h race qualifying race and the second round of the VLN season. But nobody knows if they already demonstrated their true competitiveness. So, the motor-racing enthusiasts may look forward to extremely close and thrilling motor racing. In the second VLN round, one vehicle attracted a lot of attention: the new Audi R8 LMS. Audi Sport Team WRT celebrated a one-two at the Nürburgring Nordschleife right away and without the problems Team Phoenix had to cope with, the success arguably would have been even bigger. Consequently, several drivers are happy to pass the race-favourite position to Audi, now. “Our SLS is a very mature, fully developed endurance racer but we certainly won’t be the fastest,” said Nico Bastian who finished third with an AMG gull-wing vehicle entered by ROWE Racing. “The Audi performance was really impressive.” The Audi drivers also are positive when it comes to their new car. “The new R8 represents a big step forward,” said Müller, one of the drivers who raced the winning Audi. “You feel clearly more racing spirit than in its predecessor.” His team-mate Christopher Mies, however, proved to be clearly more restrained: “Planning a success in a 24h race is impossible as there are countless parameters that can make for the crucial difference between triumph and defeat. Yes, it’s a fact that we are well prepared and will be among the front runners. But the field is extremely competitive and therefore, I won’t make any predictions regarding the race result.” 24h-race preparations the top priority Yes it’s true, the Audi win in the second VLN round looked superior but you may assume that the competitors couldn’t or didn’t want to disclose their full potential. ROWE Racing, for instance, fully focused on preparing for the 24h race. “We contested the race with four drivers per car,” revealed Bastian. “That’s a major disadvantage, particular in wet conditions: an additional pit stop, an additional driver – and this driver needs the first lap for adapting to the conditions at the wet Nordschleife. But while this may have cost us time in the VLN race, we hope that we will benefit from this move in the 24h race.” Meanwhile, HARIBO Racing had to cope with another dose of bad luck. The squad seemed to be on the way to securing a podium but then, a broken gearbox forced its Mercedes SLS AMG GT into early retirement. Extremely competitive newcomer: Bentley At the same time, HTP Motorsport and Bentley caused a stir: Lance-David Arnold secured the pole, with the Continental GT3 and in the race, he and his team-mates finished fourth. Following this result, the Britons now are regarded as insider tip at the bookies. And don’t underestimate the four BMWs Z4 GT3 with their works-drive line-ups. It’s true, the two vehicles entered by BMW Sports Trophy Team Marc VDS had to settle for finishing fifth and sixth respectively but the two cars were hampered by a lot of bad luck in the qualifying session and so, they had to start into the race from the 26th and the last positions of the first starting-group grid. Afterwards, however, they stunned the crowds with a sensational comeback that underlined the potential of the BMW. And don’t forget that the qualifying race was won by the sister car entered by BMW Sports Trophy Team Schubert. At the end of the day, it will be the same procedure as every year: only this weekend, the true balance of power will be disclosed. At the beginning of the week, the teams will travel to ‘The Ring’ to make themselves at home at the assigned lots in the paddock. Due to the huge number of 160 vehicles contesting the main event, this procedure already represents a major organisational effort every year. Then, on Thursday afternoon, the practice session will offer the field the opportunity to go out onto the Nordschleife for the first time. And this will be the moment, when we will begin to find out who succeeded in creating the best package of car and drivers. |
