"With the fourth generation of the Supra, Toyota took a big leap in the direction of a more powerful sports car. The new Supra was completely redesigned, with rounded body styling and featured two new engines: a naturally aspirated 2JZ-GE producing 220 hp (164 kW) @5800 rpm and 210 ft·lbf (285 N·m) @4800 rpm (285 N·m) of torque and a twin turbocharged 2JZ-GTE making 276 bhp (205 kW) and 260 ft·lbf (352 N·m) of torque for the Japanese version. For the export model (America/Europe) Toyota upgraded the Supra turbo's engine (larger turbochargers, bigger fuel injectors, etc.). This increased the power output to 320 hp (239 kW) @5600 rpm and 315 ft·lbf (427 N·m) @4000 rpm. The turbocharged variant could achieve 0–60 mph in as low as 4.6 seconds and 1/4 mile (402 m) in 13.1 seconds at 109 mph (175 km/h) [2]. The turbo version was tested to reach over 289 km/h (180 mph) all-stock, but the cars are restricted to just 180 km/h in Japan and 250 elsewhere. European versions also had an air intake on the bonnet (hood). Drag coefficient is .33."

I stand corrected on the HP, I took the japanese version. I prefer my cars to handle over raw power so I agree the Miata was impressive. I have actually been half way looking at getting one and getting back into racing. The Miata spec racers are very competitive and you can have great fun for a limited budget

The body style was ahead of its time. If it came out as a 2008 model it would fit right into this day and age.

Like I said, it was modded of course, but I'm sure the BMW was as well.

IIR correctly, the 300ZTT received better press in its day. The legend of the Supra really started with the tuner monster power upgrades.

I remember when it came out all the US Mags did was rip on it's weight. Now, they would celebrate if the latest generation of Super Coupes only weighed 3450.

+1......the car still looks great, doesn't really looked aged in the least. I love the Supra, but I'd still take the M anyday of the week.

and yet the 300ZX is a heavier car than the MKIV Supra. its interesting how publicity and press (either good or bad) seldom reflects the facts...go figure

...and it really is amazing how the press' attitude toward weight has changed, and yet its totally understandable. i mean look at the evolution of the M3. the e30 M3 was the lightest and best handling M3, and now the e92 M3 is the heaviest and most likely the worst handling M3. now i'm not saying that M3's became slower from one generation to the next - i'm just saying that BMW didn't exactly raise the bar with respect to pure performance & handling capabilities as the M3 evolved - they just added weight and then power to make up for it with each progressive generation. listen, i'd be bitching too if my M3 weighed damn near 3700-lbs, ya know?

I've never read one bad review of the Supra from the 90's. Nowadays yeah, because there are cheaper lighter cars out there like a 240sx. Back then, it wasnt that people didnt love the Supra, everyone did. Problem was that no one would pay $45k+ for a Toyota. I think the N/A's started at $35k

I did not say bad, said from what I remember the criticisms were heavy and not the world beater it turned out to be in the hands of tuners.

Comments near the end of this one are what stick in my memory:

http://www.geocities.com/ma71supratu...93cdsupra.html

However, here it wins its comparo over the 300ZXTT and others:
