Problem is it needs a bunch of work. Needs clutch, brakes, timing belt, some sensors, and other misc stuff. I could get this car for $1k, but not sure I want to drop the trans on this thing.

Total cost of parts I've priced out at ~$850, so I'd probably be into this car for $2k for a pretty pristine '04 GTI, doing all the work myself. I think it would be a really fun daily driver for the money, but not sure I want to/have the time for dropping the trans.

BP, what are your thoughts?

silvergray545 you have a Mk6, right?
I have a feeling my opinion doesn't count but I would think you should be getting a DD that doesn't need much work and is super easy/ cheap to maintain, like a Honda. Personally I would never get a VW for a DD. That car sounds like a good project car but only if you have the time to work on it.

It's a fair point. They're a lot more complex for a marginally more fun ride than say a Civic.

Having owned a VW before, I don't think they're too bad to work on and parts are a steal compared to the BMW, but I think this one is more "project" status. I have a couple months to get it ready, but nowhere near the same amount of free time I had with my VR6.

Exactly. I could get something soulless to go A to B, but life's too short to drive a car you hate.

My ideal DD would be something I can chuck into park spots and swing the door wide open and not give a crap. Oh? Shopping cart inside of a parking spot? Lets just push it out of the way with my car.

Land cruiser would fit that. I wouldn't mind a 55 ford pickup junker either.

We are not doing the Asian driver stereotype any favors here.

I do have an mk6. Absolutely love it. It was a lease but I decided to buy the lease out a couple weeks ago. It's been a great car.

If your total investment is $2k for a mk4 GTI, I'd be all over it. You probably won't lose money on that car and it will be fun to drive.

Plus, we could be VW bros. We could stance our cars and then go to the car show around here called "Vape & Scrape"

Mine is, as well. Too much brightwork on the X5 family except X5M.

Say no more, brb, stocking up on my e-liquids.

Everyone who has one has said they love it. I've driven a friend's mk5 rabbit and even that is fun. And for 2k, it's hard to beat. Might just need to suck it up and put in the work.

Do it. I think you'll enjoy it. VWs aren't bad cars. They're just not as luxurious as the bimmers we drive.
