I haven't used a mouse in 20 years since the touch pads became so good so I'm no expert, but but maybe the designers didn't want you be charging while using the mouse so it would be a ......wireless mouse.

Laying the mouse on its back leaves the optics vulnerable to dust, especially if you leave it charging over a weekend in your work office. Plus, having an open lightning port in the scrapings zone (*) seems like a recipe for crudding up that socket.

My Apple Magic Mouse 2's are all in storage. I use an old Magic Mouse 1 with a third-party rechargeable battery pack and wireless charging on my office iMac. (*) Maybe I'm the only person who ever wore the surface off of a laminate desk top with a mouse? I have to clean the slider rails on my Apple Magic Mouse weekly with an alcohol wipe to remove the crud/shavings that it picks up from the desk surface.....

Trackball FTMFW!! Every once in a while I have to pop out the ball and wipe the contacts, but it doesn't move around and ruin my desk surface. And cleaning those contacts is almost as good as popping zits!!!!!

I take it that you have never used an Apple Magic Mouse? No eff-in-weigh could I ever use a mouse on a Mac without being able to do gestures on its top surface! An Apple Magic Trackpad might be an option...if it does the same gestures as the MacBook's trackpad.....
