OBITUARY---Today we mourn the passing of an old friend, by the name of Common Sense.

Common Sense lived a long life but died in the United States from heart failure on the brink of the new millennium. No one really knows how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.

A veteran of the Industrial Revolution, the Great Depression, and the Technological Revolution, Common Sense survived cultural and educational trends, including body piercing, whole language, and "new math.” But his health declined when he became infected with the "If-it-helps-only-one-person-it's-worth-it" virus.

In recent decades his waning strength proved no match for the ravages of well-intentioned but overbearing regulations.

He watched in pain as good people became ruled by selfseeking lawyers. His health rapidly deteriorated when schools endlessly implemented zero-tolerance policies.

Reports of a six-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate, a teen suspended for taking a swig of mouthwash after lunch, and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student only worsened his condition.

It declined even further when schools had to get parental consent to administer aspirin to a student but could not inform the parents when a female student was pregnant or wanted an abortion.

Finally, Common Sense lost his will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband, churches became businesses, criminals received better treatment than victims, and Federal judges stuck their noses into everything from the Boy Scouts to professional sports. Finally, when a woman, too stupid to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot, was awarded a hugh settlement, Common Sense threw in the towel.

As the end neared, Common Sense drifted in and out of logic but was kept informed of developments regarding questionable regulations such as those for low-flow toilets, rocking chairs, and step ladders.

Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust; his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason. He is survived by two step-brothers, My Rights and Ima Whiner.

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone..

It's rumored Common Sense was stolen in the last election.

Which turned out to be Fake News. Thanks to Common Sense.

We can do a better job of educating drivers before they are licensed, but there will still be a lot of value in something like Street Survival after they have some real-world driving experience.

My son was moving front loaders since 12 (private property) driving @ 13-14, I agree with you in some areas it's fine for young teens to drive but as a whole, most states should have a minimum of 16

Farm license is another story

A 14-16 year old with driving education is better than a new driver without any @ 18+ IMO

My son got the gist of 6MT watching YouTube, better than me trying to explain "feathering out the clutch/gas pedals" these kids can learn if their interested but need to be taught properly, online does work with some driving @ that age

Edit: I feel ladyjane is grinding her teeth reading my nonsense about teen driving/state laws on the lol thread, no more I promise

FWIW, at 14 I was driving a 10 wheel dump truck, 5 speed with split axel, towing a trailer with a 5000 gallon tank of water through all kinds of muck. Served me well. I was also shooting gophers during the 20 minute fill. 16 hours a day and I loved every minute.

Reminds me of 1982, when I took a job at Ford Motor Co. We had a bunch of 533i running around so they could be evaluated, understood and reverse engineered (after disassembly and attempted re-assembly, they were sold as private party sales back then). Ford wanted to understand European sports sedans and this was their approach. While they developed these new cars, they imported the Merkur XR4Ti. Eventually we were treated to the Taurus/Sable.

During this time I also strongly remember a top executive referring to Mercedes as “hemorrhoid cars” because the ride and seats were so firm. We called them supportive.

Anyway I decided I could wait for Ford to develop a good copy of a BMW, or just go buy a BMW. I left Ford after just two years.
