Well, Pateks are on a another level even then Rolexes. I mean, if my M3 is a Rolex...a Patek is a Ferrari. I know it and am fine with it. I would agree with him on Tags - they have done the mass production of Rolex without keeping the price point. If your dad has vacherons and pateks to be honest even my Rolex is low end. That level of watches is just pure art - they are gorgeous just amazing timepieces, but ironically only the true enthusiast appreciates them. I see a Patek, and I know - wow. I was looking at one I decided i wanted a few weeks ago until I found out the used price from a reputed watch company was $60k!!! Jeebus. Whole different level. It's like some guy seeing your M3 GTR and thinking "Huh. m3. so I could buy this for $60k?"

yeah its a funny story. He never really liked pateks and then he got one for shits and gigs and now its all he wants. But i've been looking at that website and I think I like those the best of anything i've seen in the price range. Your wifes seems pretty solid?

It's a great watch. My wife has this model: http://shop.skywatchsite.com/6-3-hand
in all black -- great looking watch. I mean it's a new company - don't know if it will last. But the price is right - $295. And it looks sharp.

Her problem with the band is that the interior is leather -- she would have wanted leather OUTSIDE and sailcloth inside. But it's still quality materials -- only problem is she wants the leather on the other side. If you get a black one it does end up that the interior of the band easier to keep clean than the outside. Hers is actually the black on neon blue, now that I troll the website.

see, I don't like the Swiss armies. I mean, you know it's not a $5k watch. But I feel like Victorinox tries to bling up their watches to make them look expensive and it just makes them look cheap. One of the things I like about skywatch is they just make a nice watch without trying to bolt on fancy bands to make it look like a Submariner or Seamaster.

In no way at all, other than us flashing fancy German cars and then fancy Swiss watches to go along with them

The best bang for the buck watch out there is probably an Invicta. I have a few of their "Grand Diver" models as beater watches and they are pretty damn solid.
They are designed in the USA and use common automatic movements from companies like Seiko and Citizen for their lower end watches and ETA and Sellita for the higher-end Swiss models. I stay away from their quartz watches. Google "Invicta 3044" or "Invicta Grand Diver"

I got this Invicta Pro Diver as a gift. It was about $300 on sale last Christmas. It's very heavy and looks great. Its got a huge face. Not sure if you know about Invicta or not.

At that price range you are looking at chinese made products for the most part. However take a look at Orient, its Japanese and they make their own movements. Plus they have sales regularly which easily brings a lot of their models into your price range. Honestly I wold not get an Invicta but that is just my personal opinion.

In that price range, check out the Tissot PRC200. Swiss made, sapphire crystal face. Retails around 500 but you can find them only for about 300 or less.

I have a few Citizens. I can tell you they're well made, look good, keep very accurate time, and of course you never have to replace batteries.
I also have several other watches, but I tend to prefer the solars and the automatics because of the "don't wanna fiddle with batteries" factor.

If you spent just a little more you could buy a nice used Tag. Great watches that will last forever.

Yes, seiko makes good automatic diver watches that list for $500 and sell for anywhere between $150 and $300 on the web...
http://www.seikoskx007.com/ Then again, Seiko would be what in your dad's world? LOL My grandfather was so pro German he had a Leica camera collection. Kinda nice that one lens like a 50 mm 1.4 would cost a multiple of the top of the line Nikon body. But guess which one took the worlds best pictures? It wasn't the German made. A few weeks ago at this BMW only party, one guy shows up in a new 750 and took pics at a 1 y.o. b-day party with a Nikon D3X. It's so funny to see people who always have to be "seen" with nothing but the best. Once in a while like electrical equipment, it's good to be grounded. ![]() |
