Hello,

I just found an interesting question.

There are two same spec cars. One have 10 inch wheels and the other have 20 inch wheels. They run 100 meters.

Condition:

1. run with same rpm
2. 0 to 100 meter

Which one use more gas?

the 10 inch wheels, they would create higher gearing which always uses more gas

20" wheel would require more gas to to start the launch, and begin its first cycle but ultimately require less gas after some degree of velocity has been achieved.

same RPM = same engine speed = same rate of fuel burn.

they'd burn the same, why are you asking?

no, as i said the smaller wheels would create higher gearing, which equates to higher fuel burn. both in acceleration and in crusing. the smaller wheel would be putting more torque to the pavement though (at the cost of fuel)

your talking about holding a speed? then sure same engine speed = same rate of fuel burn, but the car w/ the 10 inch wheels will be going slower (much slower at highway speeds) which = more fuel burn

Only within the bounds of this retarded scenario. going slower will result in more fuel burnt since there will be a larger time differential between 0 and 100m.

In general though (like at the highway speeds you're talking about) the faster you go, the more gas you burn, due to the increasing effects of air resistance with speed. Force increases with the square of velocity.
