Question SD Cards

I just bought a Nikon D5000 and when i bought it the SA told me to get a class 6 sd card but I didn't because i had one at home. He also said the sd will determine the picture quality of the picture. Is that true? When I went home I checked my SD card and it was a class 4. So should i get a class 6 card? I really know nothing about SD cards or DSLR. Definitely a beginner when it comes to this stuff

thanks for the help

I'm not sure about the quality, but higher number means faster card...a class 4 will take awhile to "write" the image to the card, therefore it tends to stall at burst shooting. You'll end up getting a "BUSY" message when you're trying to shoot. Also your videos would be choppy. Get a atleast a class 6 but if you don't mind spending a little more get a class 10

B&H had a sale on the Transcend 8GB Class 10 card for $12.95 free shipping.

Go with class 10 esp if you are going to shoot video.

You should get at least a class 6 card. It helps a lot when paired with a DSLR. You should keep an eye out for Sandisk rebates. I got three (3) 4gb extreme III for free a few years back after rebate.

For example: 1 card @ 20. Buy 3 cards and get a $60 prepaid visa card. If you buy 3 you're essentially getting the cards for free. I also did that for the 8gb CF Extreme III (not SD) cards. I got them for something like $20 a piece about 1.5 years ago. This is just a personal thing but I like to stick with Sandisk and Lexar.

Thanks for the input people! I found a Class 10 4gb @ Best Buy for $20. I also found an Instructional book/DVD on how to use the D5000 which has been real beneficial too. Now I think I know how to use my camera!
