my best friend is in swat as well, he went from an army ranger to police officer as soon as he got back, two years later he does swat. the thing is swat do not have full time positions, they do their regular police duty and are called out if they are needed.

One time I went to a seminar for a local police department and they introduced a few different units including the K9 unit, motorcycle unit, and the SWAT unit. With the SWAT unit you were able to talk to each of the guys and they explained what their main role was, and one particular member was a Sniper and you got to hold the gun they used (unloaded of course), and it was pretty cool.
A couple weeks later I had to go to Target to pick up a few things and they usually have security outside depending on the location and usually it's a couple uniformed officers and that sniper from the SWAT unit was working that particular day as the security guy haha. I asked him what he was doing there and he said that it was part of his off duty jobs for overtime pay. |
