It could be appendicitis.
Mine didn't burst. It perforated when we were on a Christmas break vacation (with my host family at the time) in Verbier. For ten days, I started to get increasingly bad infection-type symptoms and pain in my gut. It was tolerable in the morning, but got worse towards nightfall, and each day was worse than the one before. The last couple of nights, I went to bed extremely early, practically delirious. Finally, my host family decides to take me to the hospital on 12/31, which was a long long drive away in Sion. At the hospital, they promptly gave me an aenima. So at that point, I'm in tons of pain, shitting my brains out, and a nurse is banging on the bathroom door telling me to hurry up in her terrible switzerdeutsch accent. After giving the aenima, they wanted to rush me out of the bathroom. I was so pissed. Anyway, I guess they did that to ensure I didn't have any calcium blockages. After I was done pissing out my anus, they promptly put me up in a hospital room with this Aussie who had gotten appendicitis while skiing nearby, and he was actually pretty cool. I was a little upset that I was missing the New Years bash I had been looking forward to because the doctors were "unsure" of what was wrong with me, and had to wait overnight for some tests. Anyway, the next morning, the same switzerdeutsch nurse who was beating down the door after the aenima came in the room with a disposable razor and promptly started going to town on my man parts. No shaving cream, no prep, nothing. I was like WTF. So then she told me I was going into surgery because my appendix was busted. Great. Next thing I know, I'm being wheeled into surgery, and then I wake up in a room by myself, in the worst pain I've ever been in in my entire life. Apparently, my appendix had perforated, slowly leaking instead of bursting and presenting immediately excruciating symptoms. This had allowed the infection to creep and spread through more than half of my chest cavity (I'm guessing the snowboarding didn't help that?). So, I had a 10-inch incision and a bag hanging out from below the main wound, with a tube leading into my abdomen. I can't even describe the pain. My muscles were constantly spasming, sending these shots of pain through my body that I can't explain. It was excruciating. Two days after surgery, my host family informed me that they were headed back to Geneve, and that I would be picked up when I got better. WTF. Anyway, every day, they would pull an inch of the tubing out. That part wasn't pleasant. On top of that, they were trying to force me to walk, even though the pain was so bad that I couldn't even move. They were so persistent about it too. Oh, and the worst part was that none of the nurses were evern remotely good looking. WTF again. I expected much better out of the Swiss nursing corps. So, there I was in a strange country, in a strange hospital, isolated in a one-person room due to the extent of the infection, with nothing to do but writhe in pain. By the tenth day, I was ready to go (the tube finally got all the way out on the 8th day and I started walking after that). Coincidentally enough, that January we happened to only get like an hour and a half of sunshine. Total. I guess it was a record or something. Not a very bright and happy month. Worst experience of my life. No question. I guess my point is that your appendix doesn't have to rupture. It can perforate, which is really dangerous because of the potential for the infection to actually kill you before you seek treatment. I was only a couple days away from that I guess. So go to the hospital damn it. Last edited by ragingclue; 04-29-2010 at 03:12 PM.. |

Sounds like an appendicitis. They can check your white blood cell (WBC) count to see if it's elevated and do an X-Ray, but that's about it as for as diagnostics is concerned. I wouldn't screw around unless you want it to burst and hit the lotto when you sue your primary doctor for delay in diagnosis.
