Siblings puzzle
Ryan, Darren, and Miley are siblings in a competition. Here are their results:
The youngest person received the least points. Darren got half of the points of the eldest. Miley received as many points as both others combined. Question: Who is the eldest ? |

Is there enough info? I'm inclined to say Miley is the eldest and both Darren and Ryan got half his score. But problem states youngest person received the least points...

Sorry but I agree in that there isn't enough information present. With no mention of either Ryan or the middle child you can not with 100% certainty claim an eldest sibling.
The case of twins makes it ambiguous.

Start with statement #2 which tells us that Darren is not the eldest.
So the eldest must be either Ryan or Miley. Statement #3 tells us that Miley received the sum of the other two people’s points, and those point totals are not equal, per statement #1 (the youngest has less points than the other two). Now for Miley to be the eldest, Ryan and Darren would each have half of the points of Miley has, but we know they can’t have the same amount of points (per #1). Therefore, Miley must have the most points, and Darren must be the youngest, but Ryan is the eldest. |

It's all relative.

She has the most points but it doesn't make her the oldest. The question doesn't say that the eldest had the most points. I made the same assumption as well.

Miley got as many points as the other two combined. This could happen 3 ways. 1. The other two got the same # of points, which contradicts #1. 2. Ryan got less than Darren. This would make Ryan the youngest. Then darren would have x points, ryan would have x - y points and mailey would have 2x - y points. This contradicts #2 as there is nobody with 2x points. 3. Ryan got more than Darren. If this is the case then Darren is the youngest and Ryan is the eldest. Miley would not be the eldest cause if Darren got x points and ryan got more, say x + y points then Miley would have gotten 2x + y points and is not the eldest from point #2. That would leave Ryan to be the eldest. Thus, Ryan is the oldest.

that puzzle wasn't thought thru. there's no right answer.
#1 requires a three tier point answer, e.g. 4,5,10 NOT 5,5,10 #3 doesnt mean miley has exactly twice as much as the other two kids, it just says as many points as the other two combined which could mean more than the other two, e.g 9,15,30 or 14,15,30 and NOT 15, 15, 30 so in that case, if darren has 15 points, the eldest(ryan) has 30, and miley(middle child) would have 45 or more but if you assume miley is the eldest with 30 points, darren(middle child) has 15 and ryan (youngest) has 14 or less.
